Hi Guys
Topic pretty much says it all, I knew as soon as I got the front splits I'd start something and I've now added a mp3 headunit next thing is changing my rear 6x9's. Basically I want improved bass and overall clarity while avoiding a sub. I've been looking at some kenwood rear speakers and want to know if anyone knows if 7x10 speakers fit into the stock magna holes (tj model). I'm presuming 6x9's should fit no problem if the 7x10's don't. Thanks in advance

Technically, no.
The Kewoods should fit in 6x9 spots because they come with spacers, so you shouldn't have any probs. The magna hole is a 6x9 hole.

thanks for your reply sinergy, ok will need to clarify that with you I have very little experience installing car audio so I'm presuming it will be a case of unsrewing the stock 6x9's via the boot area undoing the wires screwing in the new speakers either 6x9's or 7x10's and plugging the appropriate wires into them. Am I kidding myself? i.e is there cutting or drilling involved? Also the rrp of the 7x10's is only $20 above what look to be exactly the same but 6x9's in the kenwood range, am I correct to presume the 7x10's may be a better buy?
i have 7x10's and they come with a spacer which had one side that fit into a 6x9 hole then come up and was the size of 7x10 speaker so there was extra cutting or drilling any where
dont have there im no more. just nice hole letting in more bass into the car

thanks for your reply, ok just wondering if you left out a "no" in that quote did you mean there was no extra cutting or drilling?
out of interest which 7x10's did you have and confirming you were able to keep the stock speaker grills?
the 7x10's are starting to sound like better value. Are there downsides to them? or mainly just less options to pick from?
hehe yeh sorry, no cutting wat so ever,
yeh i did keep in the original grill caz it looked alot better,
just didnt put the grill on that come with the speakers
yeh 7x10 are better, i have 4 ways, seems to have more bass then my mates 6x9's, oh and it looks better too,

fantastic you've been a good help yeh_yeh. I might go looking at some 7x10's tomorrow. The kenwoods seem to get some ok write up anyone have any other recommendations? it just seems alot of people go 6x9's instead of 7x10's I thought there must be a reason.
if you don't mind me asking what model 7x10's did you have and what kind of price did you pay
i think people tend to get them caz they are cheaper
i like them caz they are bigger :D
mine cost me some where round the $110 mark on special, umm i think they are boss ? got em a few years back, dont have them in now caz of a few different reasons
the kenwood 7x10's are awsome. heard them off a good amp and they are great

maybe consider going to your local car audio shop and asking them if they have spacers they should have some left around from installs they have done....just an idea ;)

I already rang around, no body has them anymore, one place said they would make them for me. i tried making spacers myself but no luck. i just cant see the standard cover fitting over the speaker.

i honestly thought 7x10's would be coming VERY close to hitting the torsion bars in the boot? my old 6x9's used to hit... now i got 5" focals in MDF baffles, sounds much better and fit very easy too!

Well the 7x10s hit those bars no worries at all.
Ive put this in the too hard basket so im giving up and buying 6x9s instead and just putting subs in the boot.

Before you spend your money check out Jaycar speakers. I put a pr of Jaycar Response 6X9's in the back of my TL and a set of Jaycar splits in the front last weekend. The tweeters are about 40mm in dia and I ended up mounting them at the base of the A pillars with super strong double sided tape. Had to make an adapter to fit the woofers in the doors also had to fit the very bling bling crossovers in the doors as well. Ran the tweeter cable out through the door on the outside of the cable boot then up under the door seal. All works well and very impressed with the sound.
Now I'm an old fart and am not interested in "blow out candles at 500 metres' subs etc so the sound from these speakers is great for me.
The high range is very clear now compared to the OEM speekers.
The best bit was the price.
I have a Jaycar trade card and the total cost for me was $169. Can't argue with that. Not sure what the retail is as I don't have a catalogue here. You can get prices from their website though.

Yeah MDF would be fine and its easy to work with.
7x10's wont be much better then 6x9's in the bass dept. And generally the bigger the speaker you go the less clarity your going to get in the middle and upper ranges. Your better of putting in some 6" splits in the 6x9" spot with a baffle made out of MDF and then a sub in the boot. Itll sound a lot better then 6x9's.

Mine are 450w 6x9's and they don't fit. Gonna make custom parcel shelf anyways. What would you suggest for fitting the speakers? Just make parcel tray n attech speakers to that?

Its odd that 6x9's don't fit, seeing thats the stock size for TE >. Yours must be deeper then usual or something. I have a feeling modifications to the parcel shelf aren't entirely legal, but someone can prove me wrong.

Stuff legality. The screw holes would line up but the base of the speakers are a tiny bit larger and it doesn't sit all the way in.
I think ima fibreglass a parcel tray

Oh, I'm not changing the metal sections. I think that would be the main problem with modifying it. Just might replace the covered bit with SHINYNESS
