Wether it is in warranty or not, it is defintaly a gearbox prob and i hope for your sake that its under warranty.
Take it to mitsi, get them to run a diagnostic on it for you, once you know what the problem is, get it priced (or booked in for warrenty- try your hardest, i reckon youve got a good chance), but if you have to pay, take it to your transmission shop get get fixed.
Mines costing about $2500, but its on my extended warranty plan

sorry to hear.

if you haven't already, try disconnecting the battery terminals for at least 5 minutes to reset the ECU. if this doesn't work, i afraid you may have a serious problem with the transmittion.

re. the warranty, if the car has done less then 100,000 kms and/or less then 3 years old, take it to your nearest mitsubishi dealership for them to repair under warranty.

arent those the characteristics of a gearbox which has overheated? I guess its just going into 'limp mode'

It's in limp mode ...... IS a gearbox issue that needs to be diagnosed by someone capable of hooking into the ECU.

Goodluck.

the terminals been disconnected to try and reset the computer, the reason that i can't take it under warranty is because the car has been a repairable write off, the gearbox has been replaced and the same type a tl gearbox, when you drive the car hard from a cold start the gearbox seem to be fine, when you drive the car normal the gearbox goes into safe mode, being that it stays in third gear. I need help..... thank you for everyone that has tried to help. I just need some steps to rectify this problem.

If its only got under 3000 kms its a bit odd for a tl to do that.

I'm located in fairfield, if anyone wants to buy this car i'm willing to sell it....

it a 2004 model, with 12000km blue in colour, the car was hit before and repaired professionally. this is the only problem i have with car, the car has cost me well over 18k, im willing to let it go for 15k as is where is. if you guys need parts there is GMS in Rervsby, they have a tl there will all the parts you would need and they are very cheap in price..

It should not affect the Warranty on Mechanical.. If it has been professionally repaired thereis no reason for the Factory drivetrain warranty to have been affected unless it is non transferable...

ahh ok. Depending on how it was written off will depend on whether you have drivetrain and gearbox warranty on it.

Did they write if off because of the body or was there also mechanical damage?

My TJ only started doing my problem when my interior fuse blew and then i replaced it (the two inside the yellow cover inside the fuse box). so it shouldnt affect the transmission.

Could you have forgotten to replace a sensor/sensor wire/plug when installing the new gearbox?
