View Full Version : 2001 TJ MY02 Sports Wagon...how rare & how much???
Hello all,
This is my first posting on this forum so be gentle....
I have been doing the search for a new car for a while and after a pretty good seartch I have decided on a 2001 MITSUBISHI MAGNA TJ MY02 Sports Wagon.
Found one in Sydney thats done 152,000 kms....and they want $15.999 for it.
I personally think thats quite a bit for an 01' plated car...
My question to you wise folks is...are they rare, is $16k too much...and should I snap it up...
It's the standard 5 speed tiptronic etc....and I will be eyeballing it tomorrow.
I am trading my Audi 80 V6 in on it and expecting $10k..I think $6k changeover is okay but I don't want to get ripped off.
Whaddayarekon???

for the k's on it i wouldnt pay more than 12k for it..

They are rare.. I spent over 6 months looking for a black one.. In the end i threw it in the to hard basket and just took the VRX.. I had connections left right and centre to with every mitsubishi dealer and auction house in Australia.. If you want blue there is plenty but thats about it.. Got a fair few K`s.. price is ok but not the best..
Good luck mate.. :D

If I'm not mistaken, (correct me if I'm wrong), the MY02 is a 3L model?
I came close to purchasing a 01 TJ MY02, and it turned out to be 3L Auto?
Pardon my ignorance...what's a 3l model???
Scott.

The Magna range up until 1999 were exclusively a 3 Litre Engine, then from 1999 onwards it was both a 3.5 Litre and 3 Litre engine. The 3.5 Litre engine offers significantly more power from what I'm told, though I've failed to notice much difference.
But yeah, the later range (2001 TJ for example), on a rare occasion, are fitted with a 3 Litre Engine instead of the usual 3.5 Litre.
So yeah, check that, if you care about power, you might be making a compromise.
Thanks for clearing that up...the one in question is in fact a 3.5 litre 163kW sports model with 319nm of torque.
If I get it, i will make a change from my audi which has only 110 kW.
The 5 speed tiptronic sounds pretty sweet though...
Cheers,
Scott.

I'm seriously thinking about buying the missus one of these, she wants a wagon, I'm happy with the sedan. Good update from the Starlet. Best looking factory wagons out there I reckon. Lower them a bit and WOW. I saw one at Orix in Newcastle a month or so ago, was pretty trashed though and they had it at $21,990.

I'm not a fan of wagons. They look like a hearse to me. Yukky.
But hey, found you guys what you wanted hey :P
Good luck getting rid of the Audi 80, don't mean to sound rude but unless its got very low k's or is one of the last of them you may have a bit of trouble getting 10k for it.
And you are going to be very impressed with a sports wagon, i work for Audi and drive a 2nd gen magna and a 3rd gen verada and can safely say that both quality and refinement wise, you will be impressed

Welcome to the club, I dont know if you have had a look on the redbook website, but I found the model you are describing and it shows you the avg pric og the vehicles, and avg k's, I think theres a bit of room to talk the dealer down on the price they are advertising, try and knock a couple of grand off. Here is the link Redbook (http://www.redbook.com.au/vehiclesearch/price.asp?key=MITS01KY)
The vehicle you are looking at has the 3.5 vr-x/sports engine, go and check out i think you will be pleased with the car, they are a very good car for the money.
Happy shopping.

It seems like a lot for a vehicle with that sort of k's even if they are rare.....with these dealers you can find such huge and sometimes ridiculos differences in pricing of the same vehicles. Perhaps if you really want a wagon sports then a wait may be worth your while. It sounds like its the first you've found, right?
Thanks guys....you're all pretty much on the money...saw the car today...drove it...was very impressed and instantly wanted to get rid of my Audi...problem was...dealer ony wanted to give me 6K.
Yes you are all right...maybe I need to wait for a better, lower K's model....
Except...the dealer is really trying hard...has offered me a 3 year no questions warranty...
I have made life a little harder for the dealer...telling him if he wants to sell me the car I need $9k minimum....which I don't think he'll come at it...so it's a moot point...
But I am seriously smitten with the sports wagon...so much better than any other wagon I have driven...and how about that 5 speed tiptronic style tranny....very euro...anyway...(sigh) so I will keep on looking and see what turns up...thanks for all of your help.

Yeah but don't forget about fleet discounts. It may have been 40 new retail, but being realistic most of these would have gone new for mid 30s.
Traditionally, sedans have a better resale than wagons - but then again most wagons are used for some sort of cargo....

Don't mean to be rude but second hand car dealer warranties are useless - the fine print states that you must carry out all servicing with the dealer, and on top of that the items it covers and the amount covered are restricted. Forget them. Do however get it NRMA inspected, and state that you will only accept the car if what the NRMA finds is up to standard. I got 4 new tyres and a battery cover for my TJ2 (not that TJ@s had battery covers anyway) just because the NRMA didnt like the fact only 8mm of tread was left.
Also, you probably have not reached the limit of true bargaining until the dealer principle gets involved. Forget what the salesman says - its the boss that decides to do the deal or not.
Ditch the salesman and deal with the boss.
If you want to be a real bastard (and don't feel guilty), get one of your mates to look at the car and try to talk him down without a trade in too - they might give you $6k for your audi, but they have probably over priced the car a few thousand. If for instance, they are willing to sell the car to someone without a trade in for 21000 and to you for 18000, then your trade in is only really worth $3k isnt it? Just make sure your decoy isnt too convincing otherwise they might try and hold out the sale!
Oh yeah, have you considered going to an ex govt vehicle auction?
