View Full Version : Electrics Question - running & attaching wires

Okay, here's my question...
For those who know car electrics (& those who may have done this b4), where is the best (& easiest) place to attach a '+' & '-' wire, to get a constant supply of 12V power (even when the car is switched off). Not sure yet if this will be in the engine bay or inside the car yet, so please answer both.
Also, what is the best way to get wires from under the car - into the car.
...and, from the engine bay - into the car.
Thanks.

well u want the earth wire nice and short.. Earth it back to the body for best results, dont run it all the back to the battery..
Make sure u use fuses and relays.. if you do it right nothing can go wrong and if it does ur covered.. dont want what happend to Booya happening to you.. :D
run the underbody wires to the bottom of engine bay, and leave any wiring boxes under cover (like battery box) with drip wires (just in case you get some sideways raid). then run the wire through the grommets in firewall into the cabin.
personally im a fan of leaving wiring running under the car and letting the wires run on the road :D

Depending on the application will depend on the best wiring solution..

A while ago I started this thread but didn't answer any of your questions...

Anyway, they are finally on - just a bit of fun guys - I'm happy with them and the children love them. lol
They are LEDs that can change colours and patterns (by remote control). That way when the car gets handed over to the kids  (when they are 18), the girls can choose pink or purple and the boys can get green, blue, etc. (no I'm not being sexist - I just know my children's favourite colours).
In the end I took the wires straight up into the car's cabin through rubber grommits (see pic) - come in just under the back seat, rear wagon & firewall.
Actually they have been on for about a month (that's why they look a bit dirty) but I've just been slack in getting around to taking pics.
The pics are taken in daylight but under a carport - couldn't get my camera to focus at night.

Front & back are done too - but they are not as good as the sides because I had to mount them higher. I'll try to get a pic of the whole car one day.
Our cars were not made for undercar lighting, when doing the front you have to be careful of the heat from the radiator and exhausts, etc. makes it difficult to keep them low enough to be bright. Too high and they are shaded, too low and you can see the lights (ugly). Mine ended up being shaded a bit (front & back).
I got them off ebay... This guy always has one or more on ebay. Very trustworthy, my first set had a faulty remote (or control unit) - I sent it back to him and he replaced it - no fuss.

However if you don't like ebay, you can get the same kit from this company - only more expensive. From the photos, the kit is exactly the same. (good site for more info & pics too)
