My mate owns a te 96 v6 manual magna, he relised that he had to top up the radiator coolant which he did (i think with a different brand). In next few day, the car had very high temperature when idling (at the top of H), when he stopped at the traffic lights. When the car reached around 60-80 on flat area the temp was then fine.
Can anyone tell me what it could be! Has it happened to someone?

sounds like he hasnt used the right type of coolant. Flush all the coolant and start again, making sure he is putting in the correct type of coolant and see if that helps

sounds to me that the fans arn't working....you sould beable to hear them kick in..if they don't work and they are pluged in...check fuses and relays ect.....if they do work and are kicking in he has a more serious problem....the radiator could be blocked inside or the radiator itself could be buggered... after all it's probably 9 years old... it could also be the thermostat but the simptoms don't indicate that and the stats are expenive ($85) hope this is some help

what sort of coolant does a te v6 magna use? Are there different specs or something?

if you use an alloy radiator you should use an ethanoll glycol but if its a copper brass i would use a top of the line tectolly or something..... don't know about standard coolant but try to contact your mitzi dealer...they should sell there own

Check your Thermostat, and water pump.

the only thing that could cause it would be the fans not working or the water pump isnt working at idle, see what happens when your sitting still with revs up it it gets hot its the fans if it gets cold its the pump
