View Full Version : Haltech: Pros, Cons, and of course, the COST!

ok, here we go again.

overall ive more then satisified with the end result. the cost to my surprise was much less then market expectation, and roumors around this lil town of alice suggested a 3500+ price tag. but read on.

Altho the Haltech system did take a humungus amount of time to 'get ready' its not my installers fault. its not Dave from RPW fault either. and last but not least, ITS NOT MY FAULT! if anything, Haltech is directly responsable for the inital 'hickup' and what proved to have taken at least 2months before the 'real' problem surfaced, which was infact, the communications port on the Haltech.

once that system was fixed. came problem # 2. Please remember during this process, we have found out more info about the 6g72 engines, then you could ever imagine! i wont go too far into that, but there is a sh1te load of potental, as no doubt you have all seen, through my dyno reading and dyno videos.

one still hanggling issue still arises with the install of the haltech, but is not a proformance related one. the mitsu idle control does not wish to communicate with the haltech ECU, thus resulting in a bit of 'jerking' when you take the foot of the right peddle and the rpm drops below 2000rpm. Its not a 'real' issue, as its not hindering proformance, nor drivability, its just a bit annoying. ive gotten used to it now and i dont seem to have problems, but for a few lucky mates, they start to freek when the car starts jerking in a wild eposode. quite funny actually. :D

the idle problem is easy fixed by installing a haltech brand of idle control, but at this stage, not nessary. when winter comes again, then i will prolly install the haltech idle control.

Next problem you ask? well, now we get hairy! that idle control caused problems with the tuing as well, as it was very difficult to tune a 'idle' point in the maps. solution? modify the butterfly plate in the throttle body. ;) fixed that too :D

the most serious of problems, and where dave came to the rescue very quicky, and dave, if you read this, im more than satisified with your quick response and maturity towards this whole saga.

Distrubritor problems. in a nutshell, what was happinin was that the Haltech was trying to feed 12v through it, when it only needs 3v. This also resulted in 'feedback' to the laptop that was tuing it. scary stuff! the laptop screen was flickering, and doing weird thigns:| solution? dave came to the rescue, and rewired a new distrubitor, which did something to make it compatable with the haltech. perhaps he might go into detail later on.

what comes next you ask? well, pure tuing :D all the problems were sorted, and believe it or not, 2 days of tuning, and she was pumpin 235hp ATW, but we quickly detuned it due to all sorts of possible problems, mainly with daves' experience with his TT, and fuel pumps ect. we determined that a safe proformane level was rated around Ralliart readings, 181.8hp at the wheels, with using the rule of thumb, means 180kw or so at the fly, possible more.

What was more surprising than the sheer power she suddenly develped, is the fact its torque curve is massive. Dallas (my installer) showed me the logs of the dyno results, and from 53km/hour there is already an imadiate 856lb of tractive effort to be used. :| god damn! it pulls, and from there, its all uphill. with every km across the range, the torque figure just kept growing! eventually ending up with 181.8hp and close to 1100lb of pulling power (tractive effort)

the torque is very very usefull, as my earlier post about friday nite drags, that torque is sure pulling some stunned faces on people. ive taking mates that are always 'one way traffic' read: holden/ford fans, and they step out of the car shaking..

if only i could take ever member of the AM forums for a spin, i would. cos i tell you know, i dont care what you guys think, im proud of my booya. and thats that, call it rice, call is shit, but its my car, and im proud of it.

i recently had the sound off competions on friday, and as soon as i poped the boot and bonnet, the crowd came. no f*cking joke. they left every other car on show just to get a 'sneek peek' even the organises of the sound off specially called over the mic, "go check out the booya in bay 12"
i had the car idling, with my laptop in the passenger seat displaying real time figures put out by the engine, i give the right peddle a boot, and all you here is 'F*ck me' and 'ooooo damn' 'fuc*in sweet'

i now have the best of balance between proformance/looks 8)

every one is impressed, but me espically.

*sigh* ok, enough of the blabble, and down to figures.

*engine* Mods to date:
-RPW CAI same setup as the almight TT (with slight tweeking ;))
-Haltech E6K full Engine Management system
-Redback 2.5" straight through muffler
-Redback highflow cat
-polished throttle body
-full stop.

Power:
Stock: 141.1hp at the wheels @ 5500rpm
Haltech: (safe) 181.8hp at the wheels @ 5500rpm
Haltech: (risky) 225.1hp at the wheels @ 6000rpm

Price: *sigh*
Halteck inital cost: $suppressed, incase the price has fluctuated since i bought it 3months ago
Install: $1891.50 >> MORE than reasionable. top job as well. very professional.

but i will say, the whole system was under $3700 whch equates to:
$90 per extra horse power (using the 181.8 figure)
or
$44.04 per extra horse (using the 225 figure)

overall, if you guys were to do this, its a hell of a improvement, and all the hard work has been done for you. if you were to strap a haltech in your magna, you would have all the resources to get it done in no time. no doubt dave would now supply a 'full kit' for a haltech install.

BOOYA Rating:
9.9 / 10
Well worth the upgrade if done properly.

Sorry for the long post. and i hope i explained everthing i needed to :)

I don't like your tail lights and wing, but damn, overall it's mad. Helps me confirm that what I want in a year or two is a TT AWD Magna.

oh guys,

before you all start ripping your TJ's and AWD's apart to fit a haltech, remember this: if you replace your stock ecu with an aftermarket variant such as a Haltech, you WILL loose all 'trip computer' functions such as Distance to empty, fuel comsumpsion and the rest.

on my TE i didnt have any of those fancy 'tronics (nor a electric gear changer  ) so i didnt have any of those problems :P

you would have to confirm with Dave from RPW about changin it in a car fitted with all the mod cons of 'tronics.

im sure it would still work in a Auto car, but im not sure. :P

having said that, if any of you guys ever managed to get one fitted, (specially the 3.0L variants) give me $100.00 and ill send the 225hp map to you on a floppy disk   perhaps even $50.00 for my current 181.8hp map    8)

Hey, it would be hell cheaper than starting from scratch, and using one of my maps, YOUR tuner could just make small adjustments accordingly :P

overall, YOU would save $$ :D

hey booya,, do u reckon with a polished throttle body, some extractors, maybe a bigger/better fuel pump....... that u could consistently run at 230hpatw?

that would be a sight to see........ a 1410kg car..... 230 kw (flywheel) and front-wheel drive hehehe, imagine the axle tramp u'd get on that hehe

later 8)

me thinks all i need is a larger fuel pump to keep the 235 figures flowing all day long, BUT...

i wanna see what sorta problems Dave manages to make, cos he would then be making slightly more power then me  ok, well maybe 50 extra horses, but yer, i wanna strenthen the engine first before running more then 200 horses consistantly :)

i dont wanna break her too early on :P

so for my 12V i'm up for $3,500-$4,000 for the ECU plus stage 2 heads, fuel pump, regulator, injectors plus whatever other ****ing around needs to be done. Thats a lot of money, but it sure would fly!

On the 235 AT THE WHEELS with 102ron fuel MAP, the engine produced 320hp at the fly...

that sound about right, considering a drive line loss of around 28%.

My auto 3.0 TF dynoed 98kW @wheels with 2.5" cat back(not the best muffler) and a K&N Panel, so from the stock fly of 140kW that is a 30% loss through the drive line(not accurate as the existing mods would have increased the flywheels power over 140kW). My car later dynoed 109kW with a unichip(same dyno, same day) so I should be pulling approx 156kW at the flywheel.
