Ok for the last week i've been stumped by this sound, dunno what the heck it is...

...It sounds like someone is lightly tapping a piece of wood or something, it doesn't sound like it's coming from the engine, it's very soft, you can only hear it with the bonnet up, and standing back a little otherwise the engine noise drains it out. It sounds like it's coming from the right side of the car (if standing at front, looking towards back). Doesn't change in speed, though it is not a consistant knock. It doesn't sound like it's doing it with the engine as it doesn't do it very quickly, maybe once every half a second?

Sorry should mention it only makes noise when the engine is running in P, dunno about D cuz i cant get out to listen while it's in D lol.

Anyone have ANY ideas?

get a mechanics stephoscope and start listening to different parts of the engine.

use a funnel and piece of hose

I dont think it's hurting anything, just a wierd noise, will have to get my mechanic to check it out.

could be the belt on the water pump perishing and hitting the plastic cover?

i was thinking that or maybe your oil pump is slowly on its way out. Mine was like that when it wore away a bit and made the hole slightly oval instead and when listening very quietly could here a quiet thumping.

From the same side and on start up. i can hear from inside?

my mini has had this tapping for 18 months and i know that it is a speedo cable at fault causing it?

So umm obviously all cars are the same and its a speedo cable problem lol ?
