I have TJ Series II AWD Sports - 6 speakers, 2 tweeters near mirror, 2 speakers front door and 2 speakers rear...

Has anyone got this model and changed the stereo? Does it have coaxial speakers or splits? Can I just use the existing cabling if I just want to replace the speakers with slightly more powerful speakers to be powered by my Clarion headunit (50W x4) DXZ946MP.

I am looking at just using 6x9s in the rear to provide some bass. Does this model already come with 6x9s?

Or perhaps a small subwoofer to fit in the 8inch hole in the parcel shelf?

Most people on here have changed the stereo's in the TJ's. Yes, the front speakers are splits, yes the rear speakers are 6x9's and yes, the stock wiring will be adequete if you dont want an over the top stereo.

Have a look at my profile - there's some model numbers of 2-way and 3-ways that fit right in and work just fine on the stock wiring and head units. Not to $$ either - about $180 at J&B Hi Fi.

Id would assume you are going to use an amp if you are gunna do all this so prob a good idea to change the wiring then as u wont really ba able to use the old stuff for length on an amp.. :D

He wants to use the HU EGO.
Off the HU stock wiring is fine. Its pretty good wire for a OEM system.
If you want to add a sub though, you will have to use an amp, and you will need to check if your OEM HU has RCA outputs for this.
Ive never tried, but from what I can figure reading other posts, free air subs are extremely hard to get good bass out of. So if you use the 8" hole in the parcel shelf for a sub, you would probobly have to get some professional help which would end up costing heaps.

Free air subs are just fine if you use the right one.

8" is a bit too small to move any serious air, 12" is just right though - I use a Kicker competition freeair (old sub but meh) - and it works very well. Highly recommended to avoid taking up all of your boot space.

Hole in parcel shelf is for an 8". but will require cutting of steel which will need to be engineered to be legal. The stock space is there, but is part of the parcel shelf.

Stock wires are fine off the headunit.

stock wires will take 50 W RMS..any higher and you will need an upgrade..

Given that the headunit is 53W x 4, what is the best speakers I should install given that I will not be amping it at this stage, and with provision for future use of an amp?

I am planning on just replacing two 6.5" in front and the 6x9 at the back (and the heaunit ofcourse).

53 w x 4 will only put out ~18 w rms per channel.

As for speakers? What's your budget?

I could recommend heaps that would be way out or I could recommend Jaycar which may be way under.

What do you want? Fidelity? Infidelity? :P Some thing that gets loud?

Peace

I am not looking to spend too much, maybe <$300 for 4 speakers...

I like it if I can turn up the music and it doesn't distort...

At the moment (stock h/u and speakers) the bass distorts at higher volumes.

That is not the speakers distorting, it's prob the headunit.

Even $1k speakers will still distort with the headunit above 3/4 volume. As the headunit cant be pushed beyond its limits.

Send a PM to Marty aka "FHRX" he should be able to help you out with a good price (+ discount for AMC members)

If you dont want to run an amp or sub then you will be better off upgrading all ur speakers. Otherwise i would definetly suggest looking at investing all ur money into good front splits. With the option of upgrading to a small amp to run them later on.

Food for thought
