View Full Version : V6 Conversion

This is an idea I have been toying with for a while. Given the relative cheapness and ease to get my hands on a TR/S V6, we were considering doing a V6 conversion to Elante #2.

I know the overseas models which are closely related to our 1st gens came out with the V6, so was wondering if it would be possible to do it to the 1st gens.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Astron Boy knows

Anythings possible with money i guess.
I'm not sure how different your engine is mounted compared to the TR, but my main concern would be managing to get it to physically fit in.

This would be awsome.

Given that the V3000 and the Eterna Sigma has a V6 in it, and is very similar to the Magna it is possible.

Given that it would be a long term project, money isnt all that big of a problem, just need some ideas from a technical point of view.

I'd actually try tracking down a V3000, from overseas, to use for the parts. (You can import cars for wrecking, etc)

Go ask in the second gen section about the conversion, most of it will work backwards.

Astron Boy told me the V3000 will fit with engine mount modification.

That is what I am thinking, the V3000 is very similar to the Magna and as such you would expect the engine to fit.

Given that we bought a lightly damaged Verada today for $650, I cant see a problem getting an engine :bowrofl:

so who sais it has to be a v3000 ?

Im sure there are smaller 6's that would be easier to fit :) (would probably be cheaper too)

The V3000 was wider...

Gemini,
The reason I thought of the V3000 was because it is the same engine as the TR/S which are easily obtained and are cheap as chips.

killbilly,
I thought the Magna was wider than the Galant variants

Comparing a V3000 to a 1st gen magna, the V3000 is wider. The later V3000's that are the 2nd gen shape are exactly the same size.

Do you happen to know how much wider?

someone with a 2nd gen v6 needs to get out a ruller and sart rulling :D

I will be doing that when the Verada arrives today. Perhaps, I can measure the difference between the four and six cylinder in the TR and work from there.

Been there, done that.

The rails in the 4 and 6 are identical as is the body, only exception being the lh engine mount position.

This is not to say that the bay in the tn/p would not be smaller however if so it would not be by much as they also have an Astron with auto or manual box bolted up together

The engine bay in the TN/P I think is smaller. I do however know that there were vehicles (I am sure the early V3000s) which had a similar body to the 1st generation.

If I recall my Magna history correctly, the Magna was a widened Galant. If this is true then those based off the Galant should be narrower than the Magna.

My idea is, measure where the mounts are and note the difference between 4 and 6 cyl, then you can guess the location on the TN/P.

I say find a 1st gen wreck for free or something, get a blown v6 engine+gearbox, throw it in and work around it :D

Gemini,
Not a bad idea :)
I found the specs on the Eterna Sigma, it came out with the 6G71 and was not as wide as the Magna, so that could be worth investigating too.

As I said, this will be a long term goal, given that I have so many in line before it!

yet was is a FF car or RWD if it was RWD then it can easily be thiner

It's FWD, it is basically the Galant which the Magna is based on, which happens to be a bit narrower.

A few interesting points to add:
1) Spoke to the NSW RTA yesterday and was told that the 2973cc engine can be put in the car without engineer's certificate as it is less than 2990cc. This is interesting :)
2) Spoke to MMAL yesterday about the V3000. I was told that they dont know much about them apart from the fact that they built the bodies and exported them to NZ. He gave me the contact details for Mitsubishi NZ to have a yarn to them about the differences between the two.

I have to say, MMAL rocks - a few hours on the phone just yacking about the cars and they were more than happy to help.
