I'm getting an RPW short shifter for my Ralliart. The guy at RPW told me that I need to measure the diameter of the pin that the lateral shift lever pivots on as the Magnas are made with 6, 8 or 10 mm inconsistently. Problem is, I'm in Melbourne and the car is in Sydney and I want the shifter now so that it can ship from perth an install as soon as i get home on Friday. Is there anyone out there that has installed the shifter on their Ralliart who may be able to tell me what size I need. If I get a number of replys that show a concistent size, I'll be confident enought to get one without measuring mine - otherwise I might have to er on the side of caution and wait till next week to check my car. :doubt:

How did you go with this, did you end up getting the shifter - how are you finding shifting with it?

As an RPW shifter owner, I'd recommend them highly. There are a bunch of people who reckon it's over priced, and it may be, but from a purely functional point of view they're great.

a short shifter makes ur gear changes shorter and there for faster ........so instead of moving the gear stick say 15cms from 1st to 2nd it might be 8 cms .....

its meant to cut .2 off ur 1/4 mile time ive heard ... a pretty good mod if u serious bout 1/4 times i think

what if you shift further down the gear stick...would that make a difference??

There's a bit more to it than that...it's not just a shortened stick.

It's lengthened below the pivot point as well, so not as much distance is needed to travel above the pivot to reach the same point.

I explained that really badly but it does work, I have one on mine too.

I made my own short shifter 2 weeks after i bought my TH sports in 1999.

Killbilly is right, its not just a case of shortening the stick (that will lower the gearknob height only).
It is a case of lengthening the the lever below the pivot point so that as you move the gearlever at the top (when you shift gears) you get more movement at the bottom, which in turn shortens the shifts. E.g 25mm move at gearknob = 50mm at bottom of gear lever.

Its easier to phsyically show than it is to describe how it works.

Nope. Takes 10 minutes to do yourself.

Cost?

RPW's I believe are $220 + $110 excess that's refundable when you return your original shifter.

Anyone know how much a manual shifter assembly would be from mitsu?

I wouldn't mind trying the RPW shifter but would rather have something to fall back on if I don't like it, and i'd prefer that unit to be my current one.

I doubt there would be to many wrecked manual magnas around in Perth that I could get one from, though I could be wrong? ...

Is there any additional wear and tear on gear box components from using a short shifter, will things like syncros have a shortened life?

RPW at least offer a full refund if you don't like it (minus postage).. basically install the short shifter, drive around for a week, and if you like it then send your old one back to David, otherwise swap it back and return the short shifter instead.

Not 100% sure who this post was directed to but I'm familiar with the theory behind them, including how they work etc.

What I want to know is, is my gearbox (or any part there of) going to die sooner than expected with one fitted. e.g. synchros?

If you shift normally, it should not cause any problems causing wear. You start breaking synchros e.t.c when you start slamming the stick between gears, not allowing the box to shift smoothly, and breaking synchros. You should be able to shift quicker without causing any damage to the box.

I was quoted $248.00 for a new manual shifter assembly (PN# MR534956) from Mitsu Parts.

Heh I was using an aftermarket gearknob for a few months. The other day I swapped it out for the stock one. It sits about 1-1.5cm lower, and my god lol it felt like i had just installed a short shift kit. Gear changes were MUCH faster, dont think ill be going back to the other gear knob. Honestly the stock shifter seems short enough, dunno why youd want shorter :P
