View Full Version : 5 Speed AWD tiptronic - rough?

Hey all - I have noticed that the transmission in the new addition (TJ2 AWD) is rather rough in first gear - with a goodly pause/bump between 1st and 2nd...

Is this normal, or should I get it checked out? Also, the shift points seem a little 'laggy' in traffic, not as well thought out as the 4 speed.

What is everyone's experiences with this transmission - ie. good, bad, inbetween - and is it worthwhile to get a transmission cooler etc. on these?

Does anyone else find 1st gear really annoying (feels like it revs freely almost)?

Cheers

The transmission in mine isnt rough at all. There can be some delay in manual shifting but I now drive around that. When I first got it the shift were quite abrupt but after driving it normally and especially after a few long trips everything is very smooth. 1st gear I think is excessively low but its really good for jumping off the line. A transmission cooler is probably a good idea in the long run and they arent that expensive. Still waiting for a shift kit to be developed www.shiftkits.com.au . They are meant to learn so I would give it a bit of time or pull the battery and start over again.

I have an AWD Sports, and while I think it takes off the line quickly, I think the first gear is geared too high - the higher revs hold the car back! When you shift to second at about 4000-5000 rpm the car actually accelerates and you are pushed into your seat.

If you are drivig around sedately though it shift fairly smoothly I think - I need to go and check - I don't drive sedately - also it learns your driving style, so if you have just bought it, it may be notchy to begin with?

Don't know much about transmission coolers - sorry can't help you there.

Thanks for that guys, was a bit worried. I don't know how it was driven prior to me, so maybe it was the prior owner.

I agree with the excessively low first gear holding it back...

I suppose I could always take it to mitsubish to have a look at, any problems should still be under warrantee.

Sounds like the battery has been off recently. I do this all the time when testing TBs. The shifts ESP from 1st to 2nd are hard and slow. This is more so if you takeoff, release the throttle (the car in front is going too slow) and the car shifts up to 2nd with no revs just as you start to gas again. Seems to confuse the 'box.

I don't know if shiftkits will work with our 'box. It automatically chooses sports or normal mode for us. I believe my Jaycar 'shiftkit' didn't work for this reason. The shifts were VERY HARD and eratic. Not fun at all.

Tranny cooler is also a very wise investment. Do it now! We'll sit here and wait to make sure you do it. ;)

If the car is still bazaar after another week or two of daily driving it would pay to investigate.

How does the transmission cooler help?

Cost: I think they range from $90 - 150ish. Any brand unit can be adapted. RPW can supply them. Make sure there are enuf fittings etc with the kit.

Help: If you're stuck in traffic doing lots of 1st-2nd-1st-2nd etc and going no where the oil temp will rise, thin out and not work as effectively. I just know that it helped my tranny out.

Yes - the battery was disconnected as the airbag panel was on crooked (I had the dealership look at this, they said it was normal) - also, the speed alarm was set to 60Kph, a big clue.

I took it for a bit of a thrashing last night, and this morning, it is shifting far smoother 1-2.

False alarm thankfully, now it is far better to drive.

I think I will follow your advice on a transmission cooler, and will talk to you about a high flow throttle body (I am also in Newcastle, so postage is not an issue).

Thanks peoples :)

Alls well that ends well.

You're making 2 very wise decisions there! The TB is loads of fun - just hang off a little so you get more frustrated with the slow response on the OEM unit. Then you'll really appreciate the real deal :D

What's your ride look like? Any pics? Have to keep an eye out for you.
