lately i managed to purchase a TE waterpump from ebay. well yesterday mate and i spent 7 hours in total replacing the damn pump...believe it or not!

i must admit the east-west position of the engine makes the task more painful than it should be.

First, every belt and pulley must be taken off. This meant the plastic belt covers had to go, the wiper fluid cylinder had to be removed, engine mounts had to go, and the alternator had to be removed.

The actual removal of the water pump is a piece of cake. 7 or 8 bolts had to be removed, then 'wa-la', slam the new one on (replacing the gaskets and seal of course).

no wonder mechanics get paid half a grand to replace the belts, or change items such as the water pump.

and in the process of the water pump change i discovered a spilt CV boot. now it'll cost me more to take it to a mechanic.

I'm about to do something similar. Did you guys take any photos?

I'm more concerned about the engine mount though, did you guys just take it off so theres more room to play with or did the engine also needed a bit of a lift??

Support the engine from underneath with a trolley jack.

Keep in mind you will need to move the engine up and down (jack it up) to get the brackets and timing cover off etc...

The only engine mount you need to take off is the drivers side one.

All belts come off, timing covers, alternator, and a few electric plugs, washer bottle, harmonic balancer and the tensioner for the aircon comes off.

Apart from that its pretty straight forward. I did my timing belt, water pump, cam seals, cranks seal 2 weeks ago and took me around 4 hours. I was surprised how easy it was.

If you need any advice or get stuck please feel free to email or PM me.

Cheers
John

belts: yes

Found numerous oil leaks from the camshaft/etc.>that i'll take it to a mechanic. i got quoted $1500 from mitsu to fix this problem, which is tooooooo much for me at the moment.

sorry mate no photos, as our hands were very very greasy and dirty and i didnt want my EOS20D to get dirty...

Anyways, YES, the engine mounts have to be taken off. Same with the alternator. HOWEVER, if you dont want your engine to fall right through the engine bay than i suggest you either a. remove the engine from the bay and work from a engine stand or whatever. b. jack the engine from the below (oil sump is the best place to jack it up in this instance).

hi john:

Just wondering if you know the kind of prices for replacement seals (done by a mechanic)?

(PS my mate had cuts to his hands after the water pump job>not a happy camper! i shouted him a slab and dinner to make up).

The seals are only worth around 5 - 10 bucks each.

You should have done them when you did the water pump and belt.

Id give ultra tune a call. they quoted me $270 to replace the timing belt (only).
