Just another update on my turbo install with a few pics.
All that needs to be done now is fit the dump pipe & get the ECU tuned.
Oh & get some of the intercooler piping welded
So not long now.
Just have to wait for the good old tax return so I can get it done. :D

Oh & the red tape is where it will be welded.
More pics will be on the way.
are ur manifolds the same length
ie the front and the back ?

Almost, Never really measured.
I tried to make it as close as possible but I was having more problems with clearances on a number of things, IE: Bonnet, intercooler piping, wastegate etc etc.
I might give it a measure to see.
well as long as there wouldnt be any down side to them not being perfect lengths well it should be right

I have had it running without the turbo on & all I can say is that the flow seems more then fine.
& that was just at idle. The sound was ****loud  . Sounded like a stock car.
But everything so far seems to be flowing alright.
sounds good,
how thick are the manifolds ? they should hold up to the power of the turbo yeh ?

I made the manifolds out of 4mm thick mild steel piping. Not out of normal exhaust tubing.
The reason being that the thick stuff can withstand more punishment
Plus the manifolds also have to support the tubo which in relation to other cars is quite a long way away & also to the side, not straight up like on Silvias etc. Exhaust tubing would have been more prone to cracking.
The dump pipe however is made out of normal exhaust tubing.
& the intercooler piping is the same as the dump pipe but in stainless steel.
feel like making another manifold ??

hahahaha....... :gtfo:
Na I might consider it.
To be honest it took awhile & was frustrating but still was quite easy. I learnt alot too. Was worth it as I saved the $1500 extra it would have cost for someone else to do the same.
I'll have to see how well it goes first before I ever start another.
I might since I now have a template to work with.
so did u weld it all up yurself ?
my cooler piping will go the other way caz im getting rpw's new intake plenum and getting the throttle body getting put on the other side

Having the throttle body on the other side would be much better.
I thought about it but just didn't have the cash to do it.
It will be cheaper on your intercooler piping & you can easily run 3" piping on the throttle side.
I did weld it myself.
First time I really welded up something serious.
Was using an arc welder that is about 30 yrs old.
I might have to get a mig or tig welder for next time, I have used these & they are much much better.
how much does a welder cost these days ?
if it isnt too hard u rekon some one like say me could whip one up?

I would reccomend a TIG or Mig Welder. They aren't cheap. I think they start around the $350-$400 mark then run up into the thousands. Not sure though. Just check out a welding supply place.
I reckon anyone can do it as long as you are patient & know how to use a grinder etc.
Might take a bit of practise though to get the welding right.

Just something to be careful about, something I know from experince is the amount of clearance you have on the turbo.
The magna engine mounts with the addition of a turbo will move the engine / gearbox a good 2 - 5 cm left and right of centre.
The amount of clearance that I can see in your photos on the rear of the turbo looks like it may touch the firewall.
I woudl suggest that definitly look to get at least the front engine and rear gearbox mount upgraded to limit the overall movement on acceleration. This will also stop the intercooler pipes from pulling the hoses off and creating nasty issues.
As said something I have learn't from experience on these magnas where room is very tight. Otherwise looking good. :D
thats not a bad price
ive never welded but ive done ALOT of soldering, haha dunno if its the same or not,
as for grinding ive used one a fair bit, will get some practise in cutting the intrusion bar off too haha

Mitsiman,
Thanks for the info.
You are right about clearance issues. There isn't much room.
I already have two upgraded mounts (1 x engine, 1x gearbox) so hopefully as you said it may help.
well keep it in mind if u have some spare time and wanna have another attempt at making one
:D

Will do. Lets hope I don't have to change it.

No
I can see what you mean.
Instead of the pipe going down and then up to the turbo it goes over the top & then down a little.
Turbo is a T04E.
I am saving up for a GT40 or similar for the future.

If you have done the gearbox and engine mount then that shoudl be fine. Thats all I have on my car and velocities car but we have a little more room to work with in some places than you but like anything time will tell.
The only thing left woudl be to then do the two side engine mounts but that woudl make teh vehicle very harsh and vibraty and only something I would do in the most extreme circumstances.
Definitly garret is the way go though for the best overall performance but as you say start with something tha tyou have on hand and work up from there.

i have a GT40 Housing that you could prolly use :bowrofl:
as for the turbo - why did you go from turbo > cross the motor to FMIC then FMIC up past theturbo to TB?
you could of bought my plennum with the TB on the opposite side lol
anyway - looking very good :D
best of luck!! oh - AND HEAT PROOF EVERYTHING DAMMIT - the only things that survived my fire were the wiring, fuel and cables that were heat wrapped!!! no joke - nothing melted inside those heat wrapping!!! - dont get scory on the heat wrap - what you pay is what you get, i spent $450 on the heat wrapping of the parts i needed - they were the only parts to survive!! DONT UNDERESTIMATE the heat sheilds! - oh, you may need one on your bonnet too!! - or get a turbo sock :)

They do weekend welding courses at some tafes. the course costs under $200 and you get a certificate when you finish.

i have one of those welding courses under my belt - and i couldnt get my table to sit straight :bowrofl:

Turbo socks catch on fire ask pac performance they lost a car to one of there own socks burning DONT USE TURBO SOCKS/BEANIES they are a fire hazard
get it hpc coated and use braided lines/speedflow fitting for everything the carries liquid
doesnt make you an expert

ben tables are easier to make with timber haha

a common mistake lol lol

I didn't know you had a plenum for sale or I would have bought it.
In regards to the heat stuff I am wrapping everythin I can & I'm putting heatsheilds everywhere as well.
I originally had the intercooler piping going the other direction but changed it as it became easier to fabricate the other way.

Not really but you can get them coated in HPC Ceramic. Helps with the heat too so I hear.
Or you can get them painted in the same colour as Pacemaker extractors (light Blue).
