I have a 93 TR exec auto.
When I change from neutral or park (or pretty much anything) into drive, it "clunks" when it engages drive. Any idea why this could be?
Cheers.

Does your engine surge between gears? What I mean is does the engine rev out like it's in neutral in between gears? If so... You're up for a transmission rebuild...
Apparently the centerline differential pin (another one of those meaningless yet important parts) disintegrates/shears off, and pieces of it pass into the torque converter, and hamper correct operation. Have you had any previous transmission work done?

Only got the car a few days ago.
It's not always.. it seems to be mostly when i'm still, and begin to move.
Also no, there's no surging. Nothing significant that i've noticed anyway.
Gotta go get power steering fixed soon anyway, will get mechanic to check it out. Was just hoping to get opinions here so I don't go in not knowing jack :P
Keep us updated, I would be interested to know.
I have the same problem on the TS that i just bought.
I didnt notice it when i test drove it before buying and it didn't come up in the pre-purchase mechanical inspection i had done.

Yeh I got mine on friday but it didn't do it till monday morning on the way to tafe.. got in, started it, put it into drive and CLUNK.. lurched a bit as it engaged too like dropping a clutch too heavily.. then was fine.
Hopefully nothing too expensive.. austudy doesn't allow much room for mechanical repairs :P

Ive had my 96 V6 TS since brand new and it's always done clunks into gears..! I remember when I first picked it up from Mitsubishi, driving home I literally had it flat to the floor, and it's top speed was 40-50km..! I thought what the, this is a new car.. Took it back quite alot of times, also remember other ppl back then cracking the s**ts at Mitsubishi over these "faulty" cars, with full gearbox and motor replacements!
Now it's ok, still does its clunks into gears, notice it more when cold, or first start up.. I have transmission serviced every 20,000km, they said it's quite normal for my model TS or TR to do funny changes coz Mitsubishi didn't get the computer right! Apparently he said they see newer Magna's coming in with same probs, as the computer's still aren't right in them! Don't know if that's true at all..

Well i've narroed it down a bit.. it's only from neutral or park, into drive, when you first start moving. If you are giving it -any- throttle at all even a tiny bit as it changes gears, you get the clunk. Just gotta change into drive, give it a few seconds, then start accelerating.
It's still driveable.. so doesn't bother me much. Just one of those things to get sorted out later down the track, unless it's a 'standard' thing like you say TS Magna.. in which case gotta just turn the music up :)

My father in law's volvo s70 does that clunk thing too & it's been back to volvo so many times the family's stop counting. & everytime they'd say it's checked out & there's nothing wrong anywhere and noises and rattles are not warranty. So he's just learnt to be patient and waits a bit before accelerating. & that's only an over priced car with 5 cylinders.

might be engine mounts? does it go clunk wen u put it into reverse?
my tr's been clunking for a long time but it still goes so wont bother bout fixing it.

Haven't checked mounts.. feels like it's in the gearbox though.. will check it out.
Mum told me tonight her 99 magna exec does the same thing and she's been worried about it for yonks just cbf getting it checked out :P Definitely starting to think it is just a magna thing.
I dont mind waiting the 2-3 seconds for it to engage if it saves me a few hundred bucks.. and as long as it doesn't effect driveability it's sweet. :)

Mine is similar, but not exactly the same - Like cenithx, it only happens to me from N or P, and it seems only when the motor (and Trans?) are cold. The Trans engages ok, but under acceleration the car moves forward and after a second or so i get the clunk - almost like the trans slips for a split second and then its on its way.
Doesn't happen in reverse and there doesnt seem to be any issues in gears 2 through 4.

This has me thinking now - on the inspection i had done pre-purchase the mechanic noted there is a vertical perforation in the top of the engine mount at the front of the car (between the motor and the radiator). The mechanic suggested it shouldnt have any affect on anything, but now i wonder if the engine might be lifting slightly through the mounts perforation. I'll have to check further into it.
Thanks for the food for thought... :)

Mine did a really scary clunk today.. felt like hitting a stationary object.. entire car jolted quite violently.
Car goes in for a service/once-over soon will see what they say.

My car doesn't "clunk" between gear changes, but when i'm slowing down, then accelerate again my car jolts abit like it's gotten a sudden surge of power, doesn't do it very often, i just figured it was nothing, i dont get clunks from N into D, maybe a slight jolt (but i figure thats just normal cuz the engine is engaging the gear box).

Yeh that slight jolt is what I get but every now and then it's a lot more than a slight jolt :P
