View Full Version : Cruise Control Dead (after fitting new Rims??)
This has me stumped.
On my way in to work tonight - i couldnt get my Cruise Control to work.
The activation switch lights up ok, but nothing happens when i press the Set button or Resume Button on the steering wheel ('95 3.0 TS)
It was working fine yesterday, but today i just got some nice 17" Wheels fitted. I had standard Factory 15's before.
I cant see how, but could this be related? Anyone have any ideas?
Ok - so i have done a little research on how cruise control works and i am satisfied that this is a coincidence.
There's no way putting new wheels on could affect the cruise con. Needless to say, I'm no mechanic......
Anyway, I tried it again on my way home this morning - still no go.
When i got home, I checked the fuse - which is ok, as i expected it to be 'cos the cc activation switch lights up ok anyway. Swapped it with the 10A Horn fuse (which i know works) just to try and isolate things. Horn works ok with the CC fuse.
I had a poke under the hood and looked at the cc assembly & everything seems to be in order - no broken wires, hoses, cracked plastic etc.
I gave (what i think is) the vacuum actuator a light tap and thought i heard a noise inside - almost like it moved (actuated??) - the sound was so faint though i cant be sure i just wasnt hearing things.
Dropped the kids at school, thought i would give it another try - and low and behold, its working again!!! So now what? Any ideas what caused the problem?
Anyone had any experience with cc component failure - are there any that are prone to fail or fault intermittantly?
mine lights up the switch as to its goin to work but just doesnt work haha
never looked into getting it fixed caz its coming outta the car soon ne ways
problem is the actually cc unit itself is buggered, get a new one of them and its all better but i cant be bothered haha

my old TR occasionally decided it didnt want to work for me. Basically the same thing that your describing, the light would come on, but nothing would happen when i hit "set". Then a couple of days later it would work fine.. i never bothered investigating it.. i just put it down to the car being a bit precious

I had a problem with my CC, actually it was with the brake sensor never quite turning off which always made the cruise deactivate.

Hi guys,
I've had the same problem and it was related to to a brake light globe that was shorting out.
Auto electrician didn't even take it for a drive, just poked around with his multimeter for a couple of minutes replaced all the brake light globes and told me to take it for a drive to test it.
It worked!! He muttered something about dodgey chinese globes said "twenty bucks will do" and I've had no problems since.
I don't profess to understand but if I were you guys I'd be getting a couple of genuine brake light globe three if you have the rear window lamp. Even at Misu genuine prices it's so cheap that its worth a try.
Cheers
John
Thanks for the suggestions guys. I'll give them a try. I am definitely still having problems with the cc - it worked ok yesterday afternoon on my way out of the city, but didnt work again on the return trip & and i cant consistently replicate the cause.
I've still got a couple of months warranty on the car, so if all else fails - its the dealer's problem...
I would just rather know for myself whats going on - if you want something done right.... you know the rest :)

ok now im on the CC wont work bandwagon..
last weekend took out the stupid stock stero that didnt work half the time... put the centre console back in and left it at that drove around to work cc works all good.. went out last night tried to turn it on.. NOTHING... tried it several other times during the night... NOTHING.. so i dunno what to do..
i had the car 2 months so im still learning as its my first car... just stumped on what to do...
Ok, so i have made some progress in trying to figure this out.
I checked by brake light globes as suggested - My Drivers side brake light died on the weekend and needed replacing.
Couldnt get to a Mitsi Spares dealer to get something genuine - so just got some standard Narva globes from the local Sprint Auto.
Checked the other globe & its a Narva as well.
Anyway, when driving home from work tonight, i tried the CC and it didnt work. I used it a number of times yesterday without any problems.
Then i had a flash of inspiration. Yesterday when i was using the CC, it was daylight - so i didnt have any lights on. Tonight, it was dark and i had the headlights lit. So was it something to do with the lights?
So, while driving - i turned off the lights, and retried the CC - and it worked!!
Then, while the CC was engaged and set i turned on the parkers and the CC went off! I turned off the lights, tried the CC again and on it went. Turned the lights on and the CC went off again.
So at least now i know to start looking at the lights - i suspect the tail lights. I will try some genuine Mitsi globes and see if that makes a difference. I dont really see what difference it should make though - a globes a globe isnt it? Just as long as it's the right voltage and wattage, any one should do - i would have thought.
I'll update you all with an outcome again once i have replaced them.
###### Update #######
My thanks to Director.

I went to Portside Mitsubishi. They said the same thing as John did - but they just suggested that the globe was faulty - no need for a Genuine Mitsi globe. Any 21/5 tail stop should do. So i changed the other globe with another spare Narva - took it for a test run and the CC works fine now - lights on or off.
A cheap fix @ $2.95 for the pair of globes.
Go figure.

the cruise control often shares a fuse with the brake lights... dads XR8 ute does, and every time he has the trailer hooked up to it, becuase of faulty wiring in the trailer, it blows the fuse, and both the break lights and the cruise control dont work, solution: he doesnt connect the trailer anymore.. :bowrofl:
