Hi all,

I have a 92 magna exe that jumps out of 5th gear. The selctor has already been turned around, or whatever they did, which fixed it for a while, but it jumps out again. Do I have to get a new gear box? Or is there a cheaper option?
Thanks

Just Change It To What Is Recomended And See How It Goes Someone Might Have Put The Wrong Oil In It

ok thanks, would getting the gearbox serviced help? Oh yeah, and it's a manual car which I forgot to say in my first post. Thanks for the help

manuals dont get "serviced", autos do, because of tightening bands and flushing oil and the like. No, with manuals all you can do is change the oil (i think 75/85 is recommended) and have the box rebuilt, or at least get a gearbox joint to rip it apart and have a squizz.

Okay, finally got around to getting a quote about another gearbox. I squizzed around a few places and was quoted between $500 and $600 just for the gearbox. Does this sound about right? I haven't looked into installation yet, but I'm guessing all up it'll cost around $750 for the gearbox and installation because I was told it's a bugger of a job

if thats for a reconditioned gearbox, then its not a bad price. assuming you get some sort of warranty with the work.

I got a completely remanufactured gearbox from an AC Delco dealer fitted for about 1400 bucks. Mine had the problem of popping out of reverse and crunching badly into 3rd.

They come with a 3 year 60,000km warranty

ok, I got another quote from Kmart tyre & auto. They quoted me about $2400 for a reconditioned gearbox, plus clutch kit (which I also want to do). This included installation. Just for gearbox it was $1656 and the clutch kit was $299.

I would recommend getting the ACDelco unit as well considering they are an OEM.

K-mart probably uses the same guys for their reconditioned gearbox (i'm not sure), but i'm sure you can find a transmission specialist who can do it cheaper.

kristine, where in NSW are you? If you can get out to Windsor, there's a place called Hi-Tech Brake and Clutch and they're the ones who did my car. My mate's dad owns the place.
