hmm....turning a sub around makes NO DIFFERENCE whatsoever.

The only problem would be the change in volume of the box, since u have the basket and magnet inside.

what do you think of open air subs the sort that dont need a box i heard they make your car fall apart and shake the shizzle out of the boot i have an lpg tank in the boot and am looking for solutions to the placement of subs problem

bahahahaha, where on earth did you hear that??

free air subs are poo compared to anything in a box.

Since u have a LPG tank, you should consider having a sub fibreglassed into the corner of the boot or something. two 10s mounted on each corner behind the tailights would be nice

turning subs around does make a huge difference. I had my 12 shooting towards me thru back seat fold down and my mate told me to turn it around. He said the bass coming off the cone would travel further around the car that way. I know jack **** about car audio but what he told me gave me a punchier bass note and I dont know why but it just does. Maybe some subs in certain boxes work differently but it is worth the try

The only increases in dB will depend on where you put the dB test meter, either in the boot or in the cabin, it all depends on what you want.
Facing towards the cabin will give you much punchier bass (good for dance/techno), facing them towards the boot will be less punchier (good for rnb).

Free air subs suck sh!t, take ur sub outer the box and have a listen, no where near as much bass.

I used to have the same problem with the sub + lpg tank, i just either faced the sub towards the boot (Wasn't very good being so far away from the cabin) and finally moved it to the corner of the boot like what eek said and it was pretty good.

1/ hang on, it sounds like Kurt and slickth are talkin about turning the box around and eek's talkin about mounting the sub backwards in the box,

so first up which is it?????

2/ eek's right about mounting them backwards as the only real diff is gonna be in the size of volume of the box

3/ changin the way the sub box is sitting does make a diff as the sounds gonna travel diff in the cabin (usually nothing much but you can get better sound from aiming them in a diff dir)

subs are such a pain in the bum to get right, do this do that im really loosing interest in subs but then some dude has 2x 15inch cheap as subs and when you destroy him with SQL from a single 12inch it makes me feel better.

Best spot for a sub in a magna for SPL is facing toward the tail lights ( passenger side )about 20cm away from the lights on an angle that if sound waves where directional, will go straight through the ski hole... easy. :D

If it is magnat he would have told him to rear load. Eek needs sleep. Bum in or bum out does make a difference in some subs.

Eek, in this case you are incorrect, rear loading subs in sedans has been proven to provide a 3db gain , its called Cabin gain..

When you rear load subs the Cone now fires into another enclosure, namely your boot and the air inside that enclosure vibrates as well as the air inside the subs enclosure...
When you front load your subs, your Bass only reverberates into the Open cabin which has several Air leaks and the Air inside your Subs enclosure is all it has to reverberate in...

For a Free air sub set up to work efficiently, you need to seal your boot off from the cabin, that means no rear speakers or anything your Boot must become the enclosure your subs need.. It can be done and yes it means you have a free boot to use BUT anything you place in your boot will then take up enclosure space changing the effectiveness of the enclosure.

If there is any air leaks in a Free air set up the subs will sound terrible and it will simply be a waste.. I have only ever done Two Free air Sub setups
They do rock the car Yes, they take up less space but they are not worth the trouble..
Just listen to a Lexus or Ford Fairlane, they use Free air sub setups and for stock speakers sound great but are no match for a Rear loaded sub of the same size in a sealed enclosure..
