I am looking at buying some splits but don't really know what to get. I was thinking of getting the jaycar ones but I have noticed that pioneer and other such brands have splits for around $150 as well.
What will do I have to look for when making my decision? What brand will sound best?

Hertz make the Dieci range that sound great off a head unit
Clarion also make some great splits in that price range..
Go out and try a few.....
Features to look for...
External cross over
Waterproof cone
Power Handiling
Voice coil cooling..

Just a note....I will be amping them. Won't be that good an amp, something around $200 that is a 4 channel. So probably putting out 50w RMS.

If you know someone that can get you cost price, perhaps a friend that works at JB HiFi or what not, should be able to get you a set of JL Audio VR600-CSi for $250 or so

I can happily recommend Boston FS-60, but as liverpool_rule_88 said, let your ears tell you what's best.

stupid question im going to ask and i know im going to get rolled in your answer anyway
but why would you look for water proof cones?
has it got to do with condensation or something like "so if you spill your coke on them some *** how you can wipe them off?"
cause i thought these days the cones are all made out of a plasticy material which WAS waterproof.
just a sudden thought. feel free to put me back in my place

Not important really, your door does get wet, but stock trims have covers over the speakers.
When it rains, water pours into your door cavity and flows out the drain holes at the bottom.
Most stockies have paper cones...

Yes Tim how true they do, but if you MDF up your doors... Bye -Bye water protection and hello sopping wet soggy cones..

Most of the Magnat Speakers I have owned have had a rubber mounting ring underneath them from the factory to absorb any vibrations caused from the Cast.. So I have no need for Sound proofing .. All is sweet and next to no rattles..

Off the headunit though :doubt:
You should buy an amp for ur speakers... even a 4x50w rms 2nd hand would do wonders. You'll never go back.

Been there done that, my last front stage had heaps of power, 125 W RMS each side.. I saw no benefit except for clarity and ear bleeding levels... I don't need that now, the JVC's internal amp does an awesome job of getting loud and clear..

EEk, it is not the MDF rotting that worries me, it is the fact that the speakers located in the door must be water proof or they will deteriorate in a very short time...
when you remove the standard plastic sheild the Speaker will be exposed to the elements..
No I have been using Magnat for a long time And no ,the only differenece was the volume as the clarity is near perfect straight of the deck... No need for me to amp them up , they go loud enough and way clear enough for me...they have all the depth and responce I need straight off the deck.. Buy the Correct speaker first time around saves alot of money... Why need an amp if the speakers are happy straight off the deck...

nah i can definatly notice a difference with an amp rather than off the headunit, thats with JVC headunits having had 3, 2 or them top of the line the amp makes all the difference, even a 2*65WRMS amp gives you more clarity and response

About the water-proofing, the speaker doesn't really matter; however, when you install it, or when someone installs it, make sure they don't place the cross-overs in the door, condensation will kill it. I had mine done for me, JB HiFi installed the cross-overs in the door, and wrapped in a bag! Not too bad, but they forgot to cover the god damn holes in the bag, so I put the crossovers under the dash myself.

Anyway back on topic guys...
Some help with speaker choices?
In that range Jaycar if your looking new. But I say look second hand at caraudioaustralia and grab yourself a bargain for ~$200.
Peace
Tim
