View Full Version : has anyone actually converted an auto to manual?
i've heard it is possible and fairly straight forward to convert an auto transmission in a secon gen (3L V6) to a manual.
Has anyone actually done this though? What did it cost - any probems?

I'm interested in this too. Anyone know details of what it involves? and some reliable price estimates?
I know the autos and manuals have different hubs cause of different amounts of splines on the drive shafts, so new driveshafts aswell, The main crossmember (the one the steering rack and sway bar etc bolt to) is different aswell so i have been told as it gave me trouble when i had to replace mine, you will also need a pedal box, slave cylinder/lines/etc aswell as just a gearbox, selector mechanism and cables, a clutch/pressure plate/flywheel. hope this gives you a rough guide

i had no major problems converting my 4cyl to manual, you need:
gearbox
cv's
clutch
flywheel
clutch master + Slave cyl
pedal box (both clutch and brake pedals)
and thats about it to get i running, shouldnt need to touch the crossmember or anything, i didnt have to, if you can get the manual ecu then swap that too or you will end up with a huge loss of power down low (the auto ecu is programed to take account for the stall converter so is gutless)
other than that you shouldnt have any problems, ive done it. didnt bother swapping the ecu at the time and the car was fine to drive, engines out of the car right now getting some major work though and the ecu is being replaced with something a little better ;-)
