Hi all,
Need a bit of advice, I was just on my way to work when i noticed my temp gauge was up very high like over 3/4. Quickly pulled over and switched the motor off, head a good look in the engine bay no visible signs of water leaks or any hissing sounds, so i waited awhile for it to cool down and started it up headed straight home (lucky i was only about 1km away).
Got home waited for it to cool down again, while i was waiting i checked the garage floor where i park and yep it was wet. Didn't notice cause there is/was carpet there.
Checked radiator and yep very low on water, so i filled it up let it warm up then switched it off and waited.....it seems to be dripping a small amount and very slowly under the area of the water pump, but no where else. Could it be the water pump?? It doesn't seem to be making any "funny noises"????

Any help/advice would be great....

Cheers

John

i know that on my magna, theres a little hole on the water pump, it is over the bearing and its designed to kick out the water if it gets into the bearings. The only fix is to replace that half of the pump (its in 2 parts)

I dont know if its the same on the newer engines.

Also if theres a place where the water pump mates with the block (once again my car) there is a rubber ring to seal it, maybe thats gone also.

just shots in the dark there.

Really really bad prognosis could be a blown headgasket, letting combustion fumes
(high pressure) into the water jacket and the coolant will be pressured out at the
weakest spot in the cooling system (radiator cap or some water seal).

well it could be the head gasket. Coolant leaks in to the cylinders and that gets combusted, and also hot exhaust fumes get into the cooling system and heats it up (hence the over heating and boiling.

I think that its a matter of how fast it happens. If you empty the readiator in only a few days then id say its a leak, if it goes down kin of slowly id say the gasket, they usually dont chew through the water that badly until htey get real bad.

I say check your oil, is it milky?

i think you have this around the wrong way cars with blown headgaskets use water at an extremely high rate. and if the headgasket is blown and its sucking water into the cylinder then theres little chance of the sump being full of water. Thats a different area on the gasket to blow

its best to check the hose clamps on any hoses that are there or for a busted hose

Well today, i did the little things like thermostat, radiator cap checked hose lines etc... The only thing i can think of, is that the thermostat failed which may of caused my water pump issue...
When i was working on it last night it didn't seem to have any water or pressure it the top water hose that goes to the radiator, dunno??
Also i have checked my oil no probs, and checked for bubbles in my water no probs either.
So it maybe time for a water pump..still seems to be dripping from that area

Thanks for the help so far

if theres one thing about cars i hate.. its the cooling system!!!

If your radiator is clear, not all blocked up, if theres no other visible leaks anywhere, if there is no bubles or any other teltale signs of a blown head gasket, then yeah look at the obvious - your water pump. As they say in the classics "if it walks like a duck, looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, its probably a duck"
