i never said that was my car :D
the angle and the light make it look a little more "chromed" than usual, but on an overcast day it does look that dark. I believe that gentleman has his windscreen done too (he's a very bad man).
If you could convince a window tinter to do an ILLEGAL job like that you would probably be looking at around $350.

god damn thats how much i got quoted form teh tint professor for 35%, + taking off the old tint, AND THATS WITH A $120 DISCOUNT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
then again they take ur car and drop it off so i guess theres a bit of money i could save
according to your opening statement, i gotta say, not enough! :P

Its not illegal to tint a window 5% or any percentage.. Its only legal to use the vehicle off road.. (ie - not as your commuting vehicle)
I got my VRX done, the car i currently have and 2 other cars with 20%.. I could have got them any tint i wanted..
Cost me $220 each

In NSW you can't have lower than 35% front and 25% rear. Mine are the 5% and are very dark as you can see in my profile pic. Done by mobile tinting guy for $200. Does excellent job has reflective tint etc also. If anyone wants his details pm me.

I was told that a window tinter cannot apply illegal film to a redistered vehicle. If they do then apparently be fined up to $10k. They apparently have to allow for 38% of light to transmit through the glass (70% on two front wind ups in SA).
A lot of people find it very hard to find a tinter who will do a job which isn't "street legal". Then again that could be because if not alot of people ask for it they may not stock it.

Not sure about other states but in Victoria, you are allowed to tint to any percentage below 35%; however, it makes your vehicle un-roadworthy. It's not against the law to have it, but it's against the law to drive with it. (Heh, kind of like having a crack on the windscreen) :P

Your tinter is a pussy :P
Everybody I spoke to when I researched my tinting said "yeah you can hardly tell 70%, everybody gets 35% to even it out". The majority did 35% all around. I actually found it hard to find someone to do it legal!
I can't see a mechanism for them to be fined by putting illegal tint on a car. At the end of the day, the road worthyness of a car comes down to the person whose name the car is registered in.
What would be interesting if someone had an accident caused by poor vision due to the tint, and wasn't informed of its illegality.........hmm, my car is insured for $25k and that twinge in my back isnt gone. I might go for a drive....

I personally think the costs outweigh the benefits.
Has anyone ever thought about what they do (mostly those with 5% tinting) when it's pitch black at night and it's raining really bad, how on earth are you supposed to see anything to the side of you or behind you??
I'm not saying 5% tinting etc doesn't look good, but 35% does the job well and saves you from a lot of difficulties, so I wouldn't take the risk of increasing my chance of having an accident, increasing my chance of killing a friend or family member along with me, flushing the money I paid for my car down the toilet when the insurance company doesn't pay up, having to open my windows at night everywhere I go, and driving dangerously when it's raining at night and dark and I can't open my windows. Also then there's the problem of getting attention from cops and getting yellow sticking, paying MORE money to redo the tinting, and then eventually you will get caught again.
I had a friend who had 5% tinting on his commodore and he got yellow stickered for it. So he had to pay like another $300 to get it all done again and he has probably got defected again for it by now. They also used that opportunity to defect him for his wheels, lowered springs, number plate (remade up version of the black ones) and a few other things. He ended up paying $6000 more for a slightly done up version of a VR Commodore executive which was worth $6000 at the time - he paid $12,000 only 12 months ago, and after his car got defected his car was completely stock standard after that. So he paid a ridiculously high premium for a few mods on his car, they got defected back to stock standard and then he paid money ontop of that to fix it all up again.

i can't remember what mine is, i know its not legal, but not extremely dark either (looks darker than normal coz my car is white) and i know what its like... the 1st night i had to drive with it was pretty eerie... luckily i do drive with my windows down quite a bit! Also luckily, i've been pulled over twice, maybe 3 times since i've had the car (including the night i got it done! and they haven't said anything about it
although i have to agree with Blackjack, it probably will end up getting defected for it, (also why currently i'm trying to tone my car down a notch) and just end up costing $$$ for fines and getting other defects fixed/swapped/changed when it goes under inspection....
but damn it looks so good.....
it never crossed my mind about the probs id have with my too-dark tint. with so many dash and cluster lights now, i cant see sfa when i look out my windows at night. annoying :( but i do appreciate it on hot days.
i love reflective tint like that - but you'd be asking for trouble from cops. can you pass your pink slip inspections with illegal tints?
As i was saying earlier, mines 20% all round, but i plan to get the 2 side front windows redone in 35%. Just to keep insurance happy if i plow my car into something..

its also cos the person if caught by the police will say "the person who did it said it was fine, take it up with them. I got it done at .............." and then the police go nocking on their door, and hand them a very large fine

*cough* bullShit *cough*
If you look at your receipts, it will give the percentage of the tint done. The tinters arent legally bound to tell you jack **** except that 35% is roadworthy and anything below isnt.
After having 5 cars done and a few other ones lined up. The above is what the guy told me.

I got my verada done in 20% all round, it is slightly reflective, My previous car had 15% on the front windows and 5% on the rear windows and rear windscreen, I asked for that when i got my verada done, but the guy showed me this thing he had, it was a heat lamp and thermometer with a glass wheel in between, on that wheel he had stuck all the different tints he had and you could spin it and see what temperature got thru to the thermometer, the 20% actually let the least heat thru, even thought there were darker tints available, they didn't block the heat as well, as they didn't have some UV reflective film that this stuff had. It looks pretty cool to boot, not black like the dark tint, but you can't really see thru it unless your at 90 degree angles from the windows because of the reflective film in it.
