Hey guys
Does anyone with a 1996 TE executive have insurance with RACV and have Wheels greater that 17 x 7?
I think they don't allow wheels greater that 17x7. Does anyone know an Insurance company that allows wheels that are bigger than 17x7?
cheers

cheers There was this cool invention made back in 1876, by a man named Alexander Graham Bell. He called it the Telephone.
I suggest using this cool invention to find out for sure what RACV will allow on your vehicle as it will be dependant on your driving record, years insured, accidents etc etc.
You will need to quote your 'policy' number.. This is on a bit of paper that is sent to you by RACV. The guy on the motorbike leaves it in a square holding box for you to collect at the end of each day..
I was pleasently suprised to find that RACV will allow me to go up to 20inch rims on my car, so long as i dont break 8.5" width. Im also allowed to lower it 30mm - 40mm.. Also RACV for some reason was $1000 cheaper than any other competing insurer.

I'm with RACV and I know for a fact that I can't exceed the 17x7 size. However, i'm only 20 and this is the first year i've been insured.
As bain and jo_king said it's probably very much dependant on age, driving record, rating etc.
Just cars could be the way to go, except the only catch is you can't pay it in installments with them.

Interesting. Im with RACQ (queensland) and they said any wheel size, it just cannot pretrude the guards. Also 3" exhaust is allowed, lowering of 5cm, sports steering wheel is allowed. etc etc.
So where did they get 17" from? Ask another RACV maybe.
I found out all that today at the RACQ headquarters.
I'm quite sure RACV's stance is no more than 2" WIDER than stock, so depending on your car (VRX, Exec ect ect) it is going to depend on what you can do.
I was insured with RACV with the following:
Modifications
Cat back exhust
Lowered
17 x 7 wheels
accessories
Tint
Stezza
Side skirts
Front lip
Rear lip
Rear spolier
RACV only allows 3 modifications - but its good to keep in mind what a modification is and what an accessory is - the list I have above should help. Basically anything that helps the car "perform" better is classed as a mod - anything rice (waits to get flamed) is a accessory.
RACV insurance is the same as NRMA insurance - they are one company with two trading names.

The 7" rim width is what most insurance companies insure magna's with.....
racv, aami, gio, these will not alow any wider.
if you are only allowed a 7" rim, and you've got a 7.5".....godforbid an accident should occur, and they find you at fault, Insurance co's will do everything they can to avoid payment, which includes going over your car with a fine tooth comb.....you're extra .5" rim could be the difference between a $1000 excess and a $100,000 damage lawsuit from the ferrari owner.

Like i said, they did not mention about how many inches are ok. As long as it doesn't pretrude the guards its ok. And i double checked that by asking more detailed questions. And they never mentioned anything about 'no more than 3 mods'. So wtf? Im gonna go to them and mention all my mods and they better accept them... hehehe

I'm currently with RACV and will have to cancel the policy this weekend for 17x7.5 rims.
RACV does not allow rims more than 7-inch wide for Magnas TE-TJ model.
Had a quote from Just Car Insurance yesterday and they'll accept all the mods and cheaper too!

how many cars on the road do you think have rims that are slightly to wide or a car that is lowered slightly more than it is suppose to be, or cars with "sports exhausts" that the previous owner fitted and the new owner didnt even no they had...?? thousands upon thousands i reckon.. how many of these cars are in prangs? heaps... dont you think you'd hear about this on the news ALL the time if insurance companys were constantly refusing to pay up.... if an insurance company did this over and over for sh1tty reasons such as, your car was lowered 1.5" and we only allow 1", so many stories would end up on A Current Affair and the insurnace company would destroy their name
my point? it aint gunna happen UNLESS that mod was the cause of the accident, then MAYBE...
has anyone here actually watched an assessor look at a car? they look at the damage, not the rest of the car... my first magna was lowered 2" (i was only allowed 1").. it was in a prang.. i stood there and watched the guy, he wasnt one bit interested in the suspension or my exhaust... only the bonnet, front car, radiator, headlights etc etc....
if your car is sitting there with the suspension components snapped off or something of course they are going to check out what has happened to the suspension AND if they PROVE that what you modified caused the car to break and hence cause the accident they MAY not pay you out...
stop being so worried about insurance and tiny little mods like lowering a bit extra etc..

Yes..We get'em all the time..

up for $14k for what exactly? and who is making him pay $14k? are you trying to tell me that your shop is sending the bill of $14k to the VL owner  ..
OR is the insurer of the 350Z paying you $14k and then going after the VL owner.. thats what should happen... therefore its up to the insurer of the 350Z to fight the case against the VL owner.. i still dont no how you would have found any of this out though unless your also fixing the VL
blown globes? you mean if my brake light globes are blown my car is uninsured?

i dont no what that story above is all about but it sounds strange...
anywayz.. what im reffering to is lowering .. MINOR mods.. not talking about changing a motor, or putting a 9" Diff in.... or a supercharger... who is going to no if you lower your car 1" or 1.5" ?
brake lights out, no insurance? ahhh i dunno about that one either... ive never seen any of them check your handbrake either... sounds like a very very rare case

1st,please read my post.I said "We get them all the time" ring,ring,ring.2ndly answer this(if u dont mind) can u get a RWC with blown brake light globe? NO.And this is a fact.So if your car is not RW your car isnt insured.Very simple.Dont try to wiggle your way out of these facts. When you sign up,your agreeing that you "the owner will keep/maintain the said car in roadworthy condition at all times" .Your assumptions (at the end of the day) dont count.
Have to agree - I used to work in claims at AAMI - if the cars not RW or mods arn't listed it will cause an investigation into a claim. 50% of the time they will look over it (esp if its hight or wheel width) but why would you want to run that risk. You pay insurance for a reason - why take a risk that you might be voiding it.

Ah cool... someone in the know...
Ash, what real risk would I run putting 18's onto a TF?
Say I get into an accident and its my fault, how many of these/ how frequent would the case get knocked back because of the mods? (lowering, diameter, width etc)
Does the insurance company need to prove that this is what contributed to the accident? Or do they just say, insurance is null and void as you didnt inform us of this/ this is illegal etc
Cheers
Tim

Ok not informing an insurance company that you have put 18's on the car will land you in trouble. All the insurance company has to do is mention your "duty of disclosure" and its game over for you.
You WILL void your insurance if you do not mention mods done to your car - 18" wheels will stand out to a claims officer or assesor, so you will more than likley get pinned.

Regarding rim/tire width, you could just put your 17's or 18's on and hope that if you are involved in an accident, the car is still driveable, so you can get it home to put the stockies on ready for the claims assessor.....hmmm :D
I have 17 x 7 rims and want to put on 235/45/17 tires. I have been putting it off because I know I legally should put 225's on for insurance purposes, but I want 235's because they look better and are cheaper. Stubborn I know. :D

what about tints, do you have to inform the insurance company about something like that?
what about tints, do you have to inform the insurance company about something like that?
Tint should not effect making a claim as it is a accesory and not a modification. Tint will not effect your preimum either so its worth wild mentioning - that way if the car is a write off, you will have the right to claim market value + listed accesories.

Interesting this discussion about mod's & accessories
According to Just Car Insurance Wheels are Accessories not mod's.... And they also didnt care about what size they are or anything.. Only the value...

Just Cars are a funny bunch. Just Cars are offering my insurance almost $1000 cheaper then my current policy at NRMA (RACV in other states), whilst add $1000 to go with GIO. GIO treats their customers well and I'd prefer to go with them, NRMA seems quite screwed up now, and I wouldn't touch AAMI with a 40 foot pole, just because their stingy in their repair bill I hear. NRMA apparenltly are following their footsteps. Unfortunately Just Cars are owned by AAMI, so I'm scared off a little.
I wish I could say that I should avoid accidents, unfortunately that can't be said in real life, as I was involved in an accident a couple of months ago, not my fault, but my bad for not driving defensively I guess.

Insurance can void your claim with tinting as they can say your vision was restricted and you didnt tell them. And before people say they cant they cant, they can and have to a friends mate with a 4WD. He rolled it in the NT and they refused to pay cause he didnt tell them he had tinted windows.
Best off to tell insurance EVERYTHING, that way you are totally covered.

They work it all out from the BASE model, being the Exec or ES.

Well unlike us in the low 20's and at 50% NCB rating due to having an at-fault accident 3 years ago, we'll never reach that sort of premium for another long shot. I'm quite happy to be with NRMA as long as I don't make a claim, but its when you make a claim that starts the ball rolling.
Oh and for those who don't know, as of July 2005, NRMA (at least in NSW) will now charge you extra if you want to get your car fixed up by a non-preferred smash repairer.
