Hi guys,

I own an R33GTR which is fairly quick. My current best quater mile run is 11.3@125mph, but I'm hoping to run in the 10s next time I go.

My problem is that I can't park this car anywhere, so I am looking to buy a daily driver.

I'm considering a 3rd gen Verada (preferably an Xi). They are dirt cheap atm, and have all the fruit, and are 3.5L. Probably looking at a 1997ish model.

I only wish they were available in manual. I have a few questions:

* Any known common problems with these? I have heard they have tranny problems, is this true?

* How fast are they? Rough quater mile time? Will the 3.5 auto be as quick as the 3l mannual?

* How much better do the later models go?

* How quick can I expect it to go with say extractors, stage 1 cams, and an AFC? I would still like to keep it very quiet though.

* What are some other good mods?

* What do they handle like?

* Would I be better off with a Magna or a Verada?

Thanks in Advance
Mick

i can only answer a couple of question i recon your better of with a magna there lighter than a verada and if you really like a manual a magna is the go and if you wont something with a bit of luxury get the advance of altera. A 3.0l manaul would beat a 3.5l auto pritty easily. Yes the autos had a bit of trouble in the earliar models the big change in automatic transmitions was the jump from TF to TH the TH had alot smoother and better automatic transmition than the TF and TE nothing really to watch out with magnas and veradas there very reliable and economical cars and with a couple of mods they can go pritty hard to.

Known problems ? the car itself isnt too bad - think of a magna/verada as having the build quality of a toyota - with the reliability/parts failure of a ford.
Can't say much for mitsubishi though, I have been disapointed with both the service adviser and MMAL's attitude.

if it's a daily driver, go verada. you wont regret it ;)
You'll have to settle for an auto, but you'll be the one laughing in peak hour traffic lol
keep the manual for the fun car, auto for the sensible car :P

that's my opinion anyway.

Personally Look for a Verada, you already have a Performance car...Besides Verada's look way cool lowered and on Chrome Rims...

The first model 3.5L (1996-2000) had 147kW, then 150kW in 2001 and 155kW from 2002 i think. Just going off 1/4 mile times members here have been getting, the difference between the first 147kW 3.5 and the 155kW 3.5 is noticeable. About 0.4 seconds on average.

That said, a stock 97 verada will do the 1/4 in around high 15. With your suggested mods i'd say low/flat 15. 3.0L manuals have been proven time and time again to be faster than 3.5L autos, but there isnt a huge difference (maybe 0.3 over 1/4). Thats comparing 2 magna's though, the verada's are heavier so id say it would be a little more. CAI is definetely another good mod for the verada's.

Whatever you choose comes down to how much you want a manual. If you want something as fast as possible you could pick up a 99 model TH 3.5L manual for the same price as a 97 verada. I'd choose a manual magna, simply cos i dont like driving auto magnas, and i trust manual transmissions 100% more :)

Who cares that you are sitting in luxury? you are damn bored! lol

Yeah...I know it's going to be alot slower than the GTR, but I just want a comfortable daily driver, that I'm not too scared to leave parked somewhere.

At the same time, I don't want to drive a slug either.

Go for a manual thats cheap, and then upgrade the parts you like from the verada, best of both worlds, how i wish my car was manual... the low speed thumps on the shifts and all are no fun, manual anyday, plus its quicker, cheaper and more fuel efficent to boot!

A manual anyday, dont touch the autos, and who cares about plush interior.
The manual magna is a hoot to drive, is better on fuel, and the tranny is tougher, and they are quicker.
I used to own an auto magna, now I own a manual magna, and there is no going back to auto.

Nice & TASTEFUL! Excellent clean white look.

Hate all those who put tuner stickers on the doors.

(worst still when its just stickers, no mods  )

The manual ****s on the auto for fun yes, but he owns a gtr skyline, I dont think fun is the issue :P the veradas are dirt cheap so I reckon you might as well go with one, xi with full leather and parabolics, very nice car to be in, or if you can stretch the budget go for a gtv/gtvi and get the sports motor. As far as auto issues, the 5 speed sorted most of those out didnt it?

Go for a TJ manual sports mate. Same engine as VRX yet a little bit lighter, definately no slug.

or a VRX AWD

Or a VRX with the RALLIART running gear

Depends how much u dislike autos really? i mean if u really cant stand them then i would say get a manual magna, for the price of a TE-TF rada u culd prolly get a TH-TJ manual exec, coz the manual are great fun to drive, they pull much harder

as for the auto stuffing up? that problem was mainly TE's and early TF's, but the TCU for the TF was upgraded stopping the problem, not only that most TE's these days wich had auto problems are more then likely rectified by now, keep the auto serviced properly, dont do stupid things like going from N-D at 5000rpm and it will stay smooth

a nice daily would be a verada, xi if possible, if u really hate the auto in it tho, strengthen it up and get a shift kit, if u really want the fun of a manual (think about when ur in peak hour traffic tho! reemmber this is ur daily) then get a manual

if it was me, id get a pimpin 'rada, lowered on some nice rims and CAI and a muffler upgrade
