i have heard alot about K&N Panel Air Filter's and what they do.. are they worth it. and do they make a noticable difference?
if ya have 1 let me know and is it worth buying one.. and who sells them. like which store?

use the search button buddy, plenty of these threads around.
try any auto store, motoquipe, repco, sprint, super cheap they all can get em.
I dont have a k&n filter tho, I used a trust metal pod, gives a better sound and perhaps 1 or 2 kw more.

yep they are definatly worth it, i noticed a nice improvment in power, and fuel economy when driven nice. I got one from the us for $35 Us with delivery, bargain.

definatly worth it..esp if you spend another 40 bux and make a cheap CAI as :P well.
Yep well worth it you should be able to get one from anthony(philcom rally) club sponsor. :D

yep bought one.. and with a CAI i wouldnt have the slightest idea about how to put one in. or where to get 1 from..

go to bunnings and get a 90mm pvc plumbing adaptor($10) and then go to autobarn or supercheap and get a legnth of 80-90mm CAI pipe($30-35), and then run it down. works a treat, and cheap to!
if you can only get 80mm pipe the 90mm adapter will squash down to fit nicly over the 80mm piping.

btw photographer, hoe in the hell did you figure out the adapter would fit so perfectly into the airbox?? :gtfo:

is it worth doin a pod filter, aprently they sound cool :P but i wanna know how much gain you get from it?

personally i dont think you would stand to gain much, if any more, but yea they sound SIC AS!

sounds BEASTY!!!..take the snorkel off the airbox,go for a drive and BOOT IT..youll get an idea of the sound!

I got an Apexi turbo pod on my car, it's rather big, like twice the size as the oval pods around and it sounds ****ing awsome and it's bloody loud aswell, even louder when it's boxed actually.

i found a pic, looks like a good place to put your air filter, would get maximum cold air http://www.car.co.nz/images/articles/diy/intake/intake_cold_b.jpg

i swear to god, i went down there and i sort of knew what i wanted i saw it picked it up and squashed it into an oval shape and then went yep that should fit, i thought i might have to seal around it with no gaps or something but it just fitted perfectly, complete fluke.

I think the aerodynamic drag both from the intake extending out, and the headlight cavity, is going to negate any advantage of cold air. Even proper ram-air systems only give maybe 5% extra power.

Dyno tested my Ralliart with a standard Mitsu paper filter, followed by a K&N Panel, followed by no air filter at all.
Result: no difference in power what-so-ever.
Note these tests were done on the same dyno, same day. You'll probably get some power increase from a proper enclosed CAI, but I don't believe the K&N panel achieves anything.

i recall reading somwhere on the forums sombody had their car on the dyno and did a run with the snorkel off and gained 4kw or somthing
i put in the k&n panel and the cheap CAI setup previously mentioned, and i can say it DOES indeed make a difference.

i think that might have been redav. but thats just the way it is with these things. the gains are probably so small you wouldn't even notice it, or the slight variables in conditions prevent u from noticing anyway
i say save ur money and stay with what u have:doubt:

this sounds so wankish but does a pod in an airbox with a cai make that wicked pod (bov stlye) noise?

do you really need to buy cai pipes? do they have special heat shealding on them? Wouldnt it be cheaper to go and buy air conditionin pipe that they use for air conditioners in offices and stuff?

hmm?
The 'pssshaaaw' comes from gases released from the BOV.
CAI or rerouting your intake can only change the induction noise, which
still makes up a surprisingly large portion of an overall engine's sound.

yeah i know what the BOV noise is but everyone keeps saying that PODs make a loud noise? is it a bad noise i just dont want to have it and mr plod comes along insisting i have a turbo hidden somewhere :doubt:

Your induction roar might get louder.
ie when you step on the gas, the 'grrrrr' could become 'GRRRRR'. :)
It all depends on your design etc etc.
On some cars like the MG F/TF, simply changing the panel filter or doing a less-restrictive
air filter can increase the 'grrrr' quite significantly. Plus the engine's right behind your head.
If you mess around with a 3rd gen Magna, there's also some resonator box on the trunking.
If you lose this you could discover what the engineers put it there for (dunno).
Mr Plod generally puts his noise sensor right behind your tailpipe.
So unless you've got some stupid extra noisemakers (resonators) in your 4" tailpipe,
its pretty hard to flunk with just induction roar.

my friend's evo 8... had a nice big hks pod. once the turbo spooled up hard after 3000rpm, there was a freakin' LOUD 'SSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHH' suction sound and when he shifted up the BOV gave an equally loud 'WHOOOOSSSSSSHHHHH'! man it sounded bloody intimidating... gotta love turbo cars :D

cai pipe can handle a fair bit heat, and has wire running thru it so it can be bent without the 'kink' effect.
i wouldnt take the boxes from the trunking of the pipe to the air filter off and fill them with milk bottle lids as some suggest, because it is actually a blow back and it affects your gear changes and overall smoothness of your engine for no recordable gain if there was no reason for them on there why would mitsubishi spend their money on making them? Also for all those who have a k&n airfilter take it off and replace it with your stock paper one and feel the difference when i took mine off i swear it felt quicker althought it doesnt spin the wheels as hard.

not sure about the later models but the tr/ts era has the battery in the way of the intake of cpurse its going to be better to move the battery to the boot but how much work does this involve?
Paddles
15-08-2005, 05:58 AM
in the tr you can drill a hole down next to the battery to get ur 90mm piping down in front of front right hand wheel. there is room and u dont need to move battery in the end or u can just take ur washer bottle out and run the pipe round ur battery and down, either way works well.

All this talk of gains aside, I prefer the K&N Panel purely for the fact that it's a higher quality filter than the Mitsubishi paper one. Also because I can 'recharge' or clean it, I'm going to save money by not having to pay for the paper filters that I don't like anyway.

Less restriction on your intake the better... ie for max power, lose the whole filter. (but engine life is reduced with dusty air going in)
On classic racecars, many don't use filters - just open trumpets. Some have a sponge blob of a filter, not oiled.

These 'boxes' you speak of are actually Intake Resonators, designed and tuned ONLY to kill certain frequencies of sound (look up 'resonance' in your old school science textbook) to quieten the cars down for the market the Magna is actually targeted to.

I have ditched the 'snorkel' and until I get some piping and K & N filter for CAI I am driving without the snorkel, it sounds sweet and I definitely think I have gained a small portion of power. One question though, I'm not 100% familiar with these things, will the increased heat going into the air system effect the performance or reliability etc of my car?

yes, because instead of sucking in cold outside air, you are sucking in hot engine bay air..... not good for performance, but makes a great sound tho.... :doubt:
