Shocks can definitely wear out. If they are making a bad noise and you have a crap lumpy ride then I would defintely get them looked at, even more so if your are lowered. One of my front shocks failed after 25000km (replaced under warranty) so depends on how badly they were made. But they should last at least 60k while maintaining peak performance.

Yeah our TR has done 205K and still using original springs and shockies.... if you take a sharp corner at more then 35km/h i swear you can feel the car lifting up on 2 wheels hollywood style :P weird thing was, mechanic said theres still 4 months left in em
so yeah id get em changed if they feel spongy at all

if you bounce your car and it keeps bouncing the shocks are too soft, if they show signs of oil leak replace them, springs normily dont were out but they can sag. check the normal hight to see if there saged

I'd get a new mechanic, unless you're being sarcastic.
The bounce test is crude but reasonably effective, but it's really a test drive and at best, a damper dynamometer that can really tell you how your suspension's performing.

:stoopid: probably not a mechanic must be an apprentice .....well they say the life span of a shockies is 40k but alot of cars past that point. but if ur ride comfort is spongy then i guess u need to change coz it does affect ur braking distance as well

291k kms and still on original shocks :D. Though my car handles like a boat and i feel every bump, and if i go to fast over bumps i get air born, but meh, whatcha gonna do?

238000 kms and still on original shock and springs
handles like a boat, go fast into a speed bump or drive way and u bottom out the suspension
just got the front ones replaced now, prolly going to do the back ones myself.

i dont know if this is already been said, but i cant be bothered to read through all the msg's on two pages.
theres a lil test to test ur shocks and springs. basically if ur car is like jelly there all gone.
anyway, push down over one shock at a time, if it bounces bak anymore then 2times ur shocks should be replaced soonish. i mean real bounce backs, and give it a good push too. no girly shuvs. if its stiff and only bounces one if at all. then ur springs are fine and most prolly ur shocks are okay. ud usually get springs n shocks at the same time to ensure that its all okay.
its important to have decent suspension, cause ur shocks keep ur wheels on the road and ensure that ur car doesnt lift up over lil bumps and ****, at high speed it will become a problem if ur wheels are airborn. and ur springs make for a nice stiff ride round corners.
if u need suspension, i know a guy who will go interstate, (hes in adelaide) and should be able to fix u up sum KYB shocks and KING springs. both reasonably priced and reasonable quality suspension components.

[EDIT] I was also under the impression that springs will get old and wear out? i know they can sag, but i always thought that after a preiod of time, they no longer respond and have their stiffness anymore. im certain that shocks wear out though. every 100k's depending how u drive ofcourse and whree u drive...

I was told once, by an old mechanic, that you should replace you dampers at the same time you replace your tyres. Nice in theory, but most people baulk at replaceing tyres as it is. I replaced the original dampers on my old VS wagon at 180,000km and the rear ones were completely shot. I'm probably going to replace the dampers in the Verada at about 90,000km, by then I should be able to afford to stick Bilsteins or Konis under it. I know that it's not getting Monroes or Gabriels. As for springs, they do wear out and loose their rate, sag and go soggy. When they do depends on a number of factors.

I found an interesting test one day can't find it now though. It was somthing like this. BMW took a customers new 530 that had racked up 30,000 km fairly quikly put 1000 km old tyres on it and tested it on a wet skid pan and it aqua plained at about 95km/h. Then they replaced the shocks with new factory ones and the car didn't aqua plain until 120km/h. I thought this was pretty interesting.
A week ago I had my suspesion checked out by pedders with their shock tester. not quite a shock dyno but close enough for a road car. interestingly on my TF wagon with 258,000 kms on it the front shocks tested up stiffer then a new set of the Comfort Gas shocks. I have heard that the shock in magnas are very good. the rear are starting to weep but still arnt to spungy. very impresed. The rear Bushes are stuffed though.
I think the $14 safty check is great value. I don't know if I am a great fan of the shocks. I put a set in a Skyline and they transformed the car but I would have only done 25,000 kms befor I sold it.
I might try a KYB this time around.
Well thats my thoughts, sorry about the novel size post.
Cheers

I remember that Mitsubishi nearly had to source the dampers from KYB in Japan for the Magna because Monroe couldn't build them so the front struts wouldn't knock from new. Strangely it never effected Canberra cars, except for the Tinbinbella tracking station cars I was told. Sydney and country cars seemed to suffer the worse. I just find them too soft.

dude you need a new mechanic of course shocks and springs wear out. Shocks loose there ability to control bound and rebound and springs sag
the average life span of a shock/strut depends on how the car is driven and where it has been driven, anywhere from 160,000k's-250,000k's

235,000 ks and not a single problem for my car apart from 2 small dints and a leaky oil filler cap
apart from regular maintaince ive done nothing to my car
sheesh wish i had the money to thrash cars like you guys

At 235KKms the dampers would be nowhere near as good as when they were say 20KKms. Especially the OEM dampers on Magnas which IMHO are at the end of their usable life at around 100KKms. It is not until you upgrade to something like KONIs that you will attain 200KKms+ through normal usage conditions.
