View Full Version : keeping audio going (short while) after key is off'd

Was just wondering about this the other night... :P

What's the best way to mod the HU so that it keeps playing for a while after the key is off?

Was thinking perhaps sticking a bank of capacitors onto the AUX power line.
These caps would keep the voltage on the AUX at 12V+;
HUs shouldn't drain much current from the AUX and just a
few thou uFs should be enough to keep the HU running.

why would ya wnna do it?, just seams stupid, and if you have a detachable face it will stop after you pull the face off anyway??

First thing is you didnt tell us how long you want it to stay on for? we talking a few seconds? minutes? hours?

One easy way is, find the remote line that goes into the back of the head unit. Now splice a cable onto it and connect it straight to the battery.

Now when the switch is off, the HU will turn on and off with the normal key into the ignition etc etc, but when you flick the switch, it will stay on even after the key has been taken out (or even before you put it in)

If your only talkin about a few seconds a bunch of caps can do the trick.

I assume this is to stop the pops that occur at engine off?

If so you'll only want a second delay.

But where is your noise coming from? The headunit or your amps?

Peace

hah my magna did this when i first got it....dont know why, or how.....but you would take the key out and about 15 seconds later the radio would turn off....i called it courtesy music. Once i put my new H/U and amp in it went away. *cries*

That is a brilliant idea, i shall have to learn how to do that, isn't there a timer for this? it'll work the same as turbo timers, but i they're to expensive for such a simple task.

My family had a Holden Vectra that had this kind of, the ability to play music, radio and whatnot without the key at all. Just pressed a button the stock headunit and it went..pretty stupid really.

If you really want to do this guys, just wire up ur remote to the battery? It will never turn off. If you want a better option, wire up the remote to a switch that switches the remote from the battery wire to the Accessories wire. If you ever want the car to play music without the keys flick the switch...

Many stock magnas give you an hour of radio time after the keys been turned off anyway.

Peace

I do not trust my magna running for 1 hour considering my whole system is amp'd. So who has any idea how we should design the timers?

My car does this, i think the stock radio cable setup allows for this, you just have to splice into the right wire.
The wierd thing is, i have an amp/equaliser in dash, which has a power on/off switch, if the amp is turned on, the HU will still play music for a little while, but as soon as i turn it off, the HU will turn off. But if i have acc turned on and the turned off, the HU will still play. I have no bloody idea how i worked it this way, but it's awesome! :). Like samurai i've heard of a couple of magna owners having this, so maybe you've just gotta splice into the proper remote wire? Get a multimeter and test to see which wire gives signal after the key is turned off but then dissappears.

Everyone should already have this lead found... Especially if they installed their own headunits.

The Accessory lead is what turns ur unit off when the key is turned off.

I have a TR executive that will delay powering down the stereo after the ignition is switched off, I originally thought it was caused by the cheap HU that was fitted, with this unit the delay was about 3-5 secs but since I have put a stock TR SE rad/cass back in it the power off delay is now about 15 secs. This is the only car I have seen do this.

my jvc head unit has around 5 second delay before saying "see you"

i have had some flash fairlanes at work that allow you to listen to the radio/cdplayer for an hour after the key is removed...i have heard of ppl having timers put in for this sort of thing ie neon's ect.

my dads TJ has that 1 hour feature, on his stock headunit

Yeah, lots of factory HUs from Ford, Holden, Mitsu Clarion etc etc... they have that feature.

Mitsu Electric (high end Mitsu cars) don't.

...
The Accessory lead is what turns ur unit off when the key is turned off.

Yep - accessory lead is "switched" and it should only be a sensory lead. The HU shouldn't
be drawing much current from this lead, most of the power should come from +ve lead.

Haven't had time to check the amp draw on Acc lead... but I'm told caps should be
enough to keep the signal 'high' and keep the HU going for a while.
More caps = longer time, depending on current draw.
