Hi all,
Had a day off today and was planning on making a mount for my pod filter. Then i thought why not make a pod box for it, well one thing led to another and this is the prototype. What do you think, still have to finish of the lid but it's getting too cold outside. I'll finish that tomorrow

Update - Well it has been a couple of weeks now and the pod box is holding up :D
Been for a few long drives to the coast and back and general running around town.
The heat from the engine hasn't effected it at all. I thought the main drama i would have is when the car has stopped and heat builds up in the engine bay.... but the box is holding up.

I have attached a word doc, which gives you a better view of it all.

Cheers

I am glad you took a photo cos it wont stay that clean lol ;)... how did you join the sides??? adhesive glue? is it stable? I thought I would have to re-enforce with aluminium edging or similar.

Nice work... I so have to do mine... I was waiting for EZBoys project but I cannot wait any more.

haha cool, cops can still defect u :D

nice looking box, as Hyper said its gunna be a ***** to keep clean, but cool for o\when u pop the hood and ppl can see it but ur still providing some sort of cold air for the pod

Joined the sides with an Acrylic cement the stuff is tuff as, bonds within seconds and hardens very quickly. It seems to be strong enough, my only worry will be the heat affecting it. We shale is how it holds up to a bit of a drive tonight.

(ahhh sorry to ask this buts whats the advantage of having a box covereing the pod???)

Sucks in too much heated air from the engine (half defeating the purpose)... you pipe the box out to where cold air can get in (ie. under the engine)...

there is also a question about legality... it is not roadworthy to have the pod exposed (fire risk) but I am still not 100% sure that making a custom box makes it roadworthy, see through or not.

Now put some blue lights in there!

I see a sparco intercooler, Motech exhaust system, Cool air intake with funky box and blue lights...

2JZ no ****!

i've got my pod exposed and just recently gone over the pits here in WA and there was no worries...l only thing they picked on were my bald tyres...

so as for exposed pods in wa its a goer... and cops cant yellow ya for it... if they do u can go straight to their station and get the sargent to take it off... in WA law books theres a section that says 'aftermarket air filters, including pods and cones are not defectable unless they create excessive induction noise' :)

Even oil based ones?... interesting. Still it is better to have it contained and get that cold air getting in there but as long as it doesn't kill too much sound ;)

you think its bad waiting for the 3rd gen one!! what about the 2nd gen one where the guy has just dissapeared haha

looks cool, would be interesting to see if it hold up

Looks cool, just curious, do you have CAI piping leading underneath it or coming out the end of it? I cant seem to see any and if you dont then as soon as you put the lid on your engine wont start lol.

Prototype as in not going to be used and just designing it?

You do realise it gets very hot in the engine bay and perspex = melt/warp..

Good idea mate.. Just not using the right materials..

I was trying to find a sheet of anything other than perspex, but I haven't been able to find anything with a suitable gauge. I have a sheet of smoked polycarbonate now but I am reluctant to use it as polycarbonate is crap with chemicals and oils.... I might use it to model from...

Does anyone know where to get thicker gauge plastic sheeting, in ABS or HDPE or even polypropylene... has to be thicker than 3mm though... I know I used to make 4.5mm sheeting where i used to work... that would be ok... but I cant find it to buy it.

I know this sounds out there..

But what about plexiglass? Only problem is, is it turns a 'cheap' mod into an expensive mod.

Only other way is to do injection moulded plastic..

I was waiting for EZBoy to see how he went with his vacuum forming project... anyway, I thought Plexiglass was a fancy name for Acrylic(perspex).

I think I need a crystaline plastic, not amorphous

I could be totally wrong..

And to be honest. If you are making a pod box, youre better off getting a panel filter and adding a 2nd cai.. lol

You love your panel filter's dont you?

without readiing the whole thread - but wasnt this the arguement before, that a POD Is legal as long as it is in a sealed box?

so altho the pod is easily seen - it is still in a box - which would then make it legal?

dont the XR8's and GT/GTp's have a POD like air intake? but covered?

You love your panel filter's dont you? Yep, I just dont want people to be suckered in to spending 200+ on a filter that will hinder performance unless you spend the additional $300 on proper CAI to reposition it.

That was the original argument, but its since moved onto durability issues.

or getting a XR6T  lol

I still have the panel filter, but I still think this pod is worth playing with, as much of an effort it will take to get it done... and as slack as I am lol

temagna: How much sound did the box kill off?

Shouldn't you be able to build the box out of whatever and just cover it in heat resitant material?

yep, there is CAI piping, i've got it coming up from the front bumper.

temagna: How much sound did the box kill off?[/QUOTE]

Well i haven't finished the lid yet so it's not sealed yet...could be me but it seems to have gained a bit more of a growl, i would say this will all change once it is sealed.
The heat doesn't seem to be affecting it at the moment, but i will wait and see.

Thanks for all the comments :D

It's my CAI pipe, got it from Reece plumbing. It's 100mm ducting, they use for air con.

so do u have that silver ducting pipe all the way to the bottom or do u have sumthing else at the bottom. if onthing else at the bottom, so its jus that pipe all the way through. how did u get it through the bottom. which path or gap did u put it through.

Ahhh now i see. That actually looks pretty good, looks like you've put alot of thought into it. I am happy with my panel, but would be awesome to see a similar setup on a 2nd gen.

Yep the silver ducting goes all the way to the front bumper, the te has small grills where you can mount driving lights, well i took them of and cut the grooves out, the CAI starts there and goes into the pod box.
The piping runs from the air box down next to my battery box and radiator. It was a really tight fit to get the ducting down there. Iv'e got some pics of it i'll find them and post em up.

Ah! Copy Cat!! Same bottom profile too! Great minds think alike heh?

My vacuum moulded project has stalled at the "got no money" zone.

Use Acrylic sheeting. Relatively heat resistant, strong, glues easily, doesn't scratch as easy as polycarb. I used 4.5mm.

Yeah, hope you don't mind
All the credit for the planning and thought goes to you on this, i just simply put it together :)

I used Acrylic sheeting it's about 3-4mm thick, i just finished the the final box. The "test" one seemed to hold up to the heat ok, went for a big drive Friday and cruising all night Friday no dramas.
So i made the final (i hope) one today with lid. Will post pics soon.

Do you need a special bracket to mount the pod on the air intake? If so, where can you get them from?
