Hi guys,

As some of you know Im currently having a dispute with both the service adviser and MMAL over the paint flaking off the rubber surrounding my rear screen. I know from previous threads such as the "rear windscreen rattle TJ AWD" thread and others that at least 8 of you have had this issue and it has been replaced under warranty.

Their argument is that it's enviromental effects, however this makes my blood boil as I know other people have had the same problem and its been replaced.

Can I ask for EVERYONE who has had a paint pealing problem around the rear screen to post below. Also, could I ask if anyone has any photos of their flaking rear screen could they please place them up.

Thanks in advance.

Did you buy the car brand new? & What colour is it?

this too is giving me the sh**s, and I'm a BCom/LLB and so is my bro. i've got a TJII and the issue is with mitsu ATM. if they knock it back..............

it doesn't matter if the car was bought new or not, its fully transferrable and it is a defect in materials/workmanship. how many early models have this problem.

Had mine replaced. Was no question about it, I said it was flaking they replaced it with a new one which is much thinner(obviously new design). Done at Ryde Motor Group.

Its not just early models.

what I meant was it doesn't seem to affect models before TJ.

The car is second hand but its still under warranty - the paint flaking stories from the other thread match exactly whats happening with this car.

My car is a 1999 TH and the paint has peeled from the rubber surrounding the rear windscreen.. to tell u the truth there isnt much paint left at all on there..

So its not just TJ-TL models.

Pre TW/KW, I think the warranty was 3 years engine, transmission and driveline, body parts were
2 years or even 1 year only.

With the KW GTVi, Before the 3 year warranty runs out I have to take it back to a dealer to get it
checked to make sure the log book was kept to date (serviced at regular intervals etc) and then
the warranty extended another 2 years at which time I have to bring it back again, same check and
then extended another 5 years (for the engine, transmission and driveline only).

Nup - 3 years bumper to bumper.

Ill put pics up of the flaking tonight or tomorrow morning. Please keep your responses coming in though guys.

Yep mines flaking. Can't do much about it though as I have tints and don't want to fork out for re-tinting a new rear screen if Mitsu replace the window and seals.

Probably covered under extended (3rd party underwritten) warranty. Factory warranty should cover this if it's a defect.

Hmmm dav_au u seem to be having a bit of a problem with your dealer.

When my mums TJ II went to mits to get a fuel pickup sensor replaced when i picked it up i asked why there was paint coming off the rear window seal, he then went inside came back a few mins later and said bring the car back in tomorow morning and we will replace it under warranty.

So either the dealer you are going to is dodgy or they are too lazy to fix it.

I didnt even have to ask for it to be replaced thats how good my dealer was.

I certainly do, so I took action and emailed MMAL customer service point about 3 weeks ago. They contacted me this week and took the line from the service advisor that it was enviromental damage. I'm feeling really disapointed that they took this line - obviously people have had their replaced under warranty. MMAL wont even admit that there is a known defect.

mine is all flaky... makes it so crap to chamois the car coz u end up with little black bits everywhere!

does anyone know if they can just replace the seal and not the whole window? coz i dont wanna pay for a re-tint either!

If you are still covered by new car warranty then you can take it to any mitsi dealer(i would try a different one) i had mine replaced but it was the squeaking that got me i didnt have any paint peeling on mine. :D

Thanks for your input so far guys, I'm fairly disheartened by what has happened. My aim of this thread is to try and gain some rough numbers of how many Magnas/Veradas have been inflicted by this problem. So far I would argue that we have certainly had a few to cause concern. It has been suggested to me that to replace the rubber around the rear screen usually results in damage to the rear glass, hence the rear screen in it's entirity would have to be replaced.

Please keep posting if you have experienced this problem, as I've stated before, I have spoken to both the dealer and MMAL, both have knocked me back on what I consider to be a manufacturing defect - I want to attempt to prove that a defect does exist.

I booked out one for a TJ yesterday. I have seen quite a few done under warranty.

Find another dealer if they won't help if its still under warranty

Ive got an idea for you to show mits that it is a manufacturing fault put a poll in Tech torque or general and ask who has had theirs replaced under warranty and who has the flaking etc etc.

Then post MMAL the results or maybe the location of hte poll and let them have a look at the replys.

Mine was replaced no questions asked, the revised rear windscreen comes with different seals (or atleast mine did) which shouldn't have the same issue as they aren't painted.

Same Here Kh Verada Every Time I Visit The Car Wash I Just Blast All The Flaky Bits Off So One Day I Will End Up With A Seal That Has None Of This Flaky S##t!
