hi all
i got defected and i went thru the inspection station and my rear brakes failed the brake test, the brake test is where they put the front wheels on rollers and spin the wheels to a certain speed and then u brake and it measures the braking distance etc. Then they put the rear wheels on the spinner and do the same
anyways i passed the front and failed the rear
i thought it couldve been my pads but i looked at them and it seems that ive still got heaps of pad left! i replaced them about 2 years ago i reckon, they are Bendix ultimate i reckon
so if its not the pads that is causing my **** braking what could it be??!!! i needa get this fixed before my next apointment with the inspection station (next week)

I wonder if any magna with standard rear brakes pass the test. You could put some stock pads back, they probably work better when cold. Were the brakes cold when the test was done? If so try putting them through their paces before you go in. Other than that, hmmm.

they inspected the car for about 20-25 mins b4 puttin it on the rollers
they would be cool but not hot or not cold
i think maybe air in the brake lines? or maybe warped discs therefore not enuff contact area? maybe the brakes are really glazed and need a skim
i dunno but im getting slotted brakes anyway
see if that fixes the problem
If there is air in your brake lines then they need a bleed but i am sure you knew that didnt you dave.Have been for the brake test before in regency (not in the magna though) but we adjusted the rear brake shoes and bleed the hole system ,got through the first time in fact it tossed us forward off the rollers. :D
how good are your shocks ?

on a Front wheel drive car 80% of braking is done at front wheels 20% at rear, does this help you.........on F R setup 60% on front 40% on rear, and on M R 50% on rear 50% front . ....and on a R R 80% rear 20% front

Its not quite like that a rear engined car still has a higher brake bias towards the front.

vw kombis have R R and they are 80% on rear 20%on front

One possible answer is that the calipers have seized up, or the piston has bound up in the cylinder. You can check for free movement by disconnecting the brake line and removing the pads. The two halves of the caliper should move freely against each other, and the piston should move up and down the cylinder freely.

You cant make assumptions for all cars based on one cars setup.
Especially considering some cars these days(ie. Colt) have Electronic Brake Distribution to force the rear wheels to do thier fair share of braking.
I dont think 80% would be biased towards the front on a magna. That seems a bit high.

yep,
and if a commy (for example) did 40%of braking to the rear - then the rear calipers would be far superior then the 1piston job they come with
most and goes for all cars - braking is done from the front of the car,
because thats where all the energy needs to be dispursed.

It Normily Works On The Weight Of The Car As For Magna Most Of The Weight Is In The Front So I Would Say There Would Be 80 To 70% In The Front And 20 To 30% In Rear Thats Why Front Wheel Drives Chew Up Front Brakes Norimily 30 To 50000 Km In Front Pads 100000 In Rear .

Alright i'll go over to the porsche workshop that is in the company i work for and take a look, as bondy said you can't make assumptions for all cars, and its not just based on weight, i know for a fact that BMW don't have a 50/50 brake split even though there weight distribution is 50/50 its all different horses for different courses

on a side note how long does a set of pads usually last you guys? i got new pads and my discs machined about 2.5/3 months ago, and when i got new tyres today the guy said my pads are about 5 mm off and ill need new ones soon!?!?

How hard do you brake? do you follow the person in front real close and have to brake often?

yep, do a trackday and you could chew up a brandnew set of pads in 1 session.
City driving might get 40,000+ from stock pads.
Suburban driving with common sense can see 80,000 even from the fronts.

well i replaced the rear pads about 2 years ago and have done about 60 000kms on the new bendix pads and if u look at the gap between the metal and disc it has around 8mm
so ive come to belive it isnt a pad issue (or shouldnt be) either way im going to order some slotted rears as im not going to reface my rear disc again and ill get the brake guys to check over the calipers etc while im there

clearly the front brakes on a magna do far more work than the rear i have replaced my front brake pads 2 times and never changed the rear ones.
do the morons down at regencey have any idea what there looking at it seems to me they are on a real power trip. the complaints on this fourm alone are mind bogiling  and over such minor things who do we complain to about them. or start a petition or something

I've got Bendix ultmates on my car, got 25'000 out of the fronts (and there wasnt anything left), back ones are still like new, which have now done about 35'ks
