hey guys,
i'm looking for a 12" sub with a fair bit of power. I've narrowed it down to a few, and just want your opinions on which one would be best for me. I mainly listen to dance/techno, and some RnB, and a bit of everything else. I'd prefer nice deep, clean tones instead of just loudness.
I don't have any other components at the moment, so i was also wondering if someone could recommend an amp for under $600 that would power one of these subs nicely.
so my choices are:
- Image Dynamics IDMAX12 V.3
1000wrms, dual 2 ohm
- DD audio 9512f
1200wrms, 2400w peak
- RE audio SX12
1000wrms, 2000w peak
- RE audio XXX
1600wrms, 2500w peak
The RE XXX is a tad expensive, but if it's as good as it turns out to be, i might consider stretching my budget.
Oh and Megatron, does the jaycar monoblock amp provide enough power to your RE XXX??
cheers,
Sam

I was told that 2 x 10" subs are a better choice for trance/techno music... they pump harder for this kind of bass. Many peeps actually backed that up. Coz i wanna go the same way ;)

also with those subs that can handle like 1000wrms, the bass is gonna be more like boooooooooooooom boooooooooooooom.
if you get either smaller subs or some 12"s that cant handle as much the bass will be more boom boom if ya get what i mean

Nope...dont knwo what you mean. You saying the 2 x 10" are better for this use? or the 12"?

im no expert but im saying either 2 10"s or maybe one 12 that can handle say 600 watts or so.
if you get something that can handle like 1000 watts, its just going to be TOO bassy, i.e. boooooooooom boooooooooom
2 10"s will have a nice punchy beat to em, but thats just my opinion, ask magnat or colgate about this stuff there pros :P
unless of course he actually wants a boooooooooooom booooooooooooooom sound, then, there perfect for that

What's the point of having anything that loud anyways. A: nobody can stand noise at such high volume without either going nuts or permanent ear damage. B: Who said the neighbourhood wanted to hear the music? lol
I'd say, get some nice 2 x 10" with a nice amp, and that should do the job. Spend the rest of the money on something more constructive... or under the bonnet ;)

yea,i reckon 2 10" subs will do the job nicely, it wont hurt the ears as much and u wont get too much of that echoey noise u sometimes get if u hav the bass up too much (usually happens with bigger subs in a not so good enclosure i think)
but personally im gonna hav only 1 10" sub in my wagon :)

i can understand why you'd wanna get 2 10" subs, but these subs r for SQ and i'm hoping someone will say that they can handle some techno music... plus i really like my bass, and the look of my install. And i think 1 12" sub would look better than 2 10" subs, coz i also want to view the magnet through the ski port, and these subs have nice magnets :D
i would wanna spend some money elsewhere like engine mods, but i wanna do all the engine mods once i have my full license, which is a few years away!
thanks for the advice so far. :)

10's will offer Punch , 12's will offer more low end..
If your Main Techno is Dance then go Two Sealed 10's, but if you are after more low end I would go with Two 12 inch Ported..
For a Compromise I would go for Two 12 inch in a sealed enclosure.. Best of Both Worlds..
You should be able to get Two Elcipse 123.4's in a Dual 12 inch Enclosure for around $450..
Check out what Soundstream, Boston, VIBE and Cadence have to offer..
I installed Two of the Eclipse into a Dual Chambered Sealed enclosure and Rear loaded it into a VR Commodore and the Bass was Very Punchy and the Lows got down and Clean... All powered off a Boss 1200 W AMP...
Best Idea is to go out and get a Demo on a Few, Take a CD with one of your Favourite Songs that you know that sounds right, and get a Demo with it so you can hear how hard the sub can Punch..
I have attached the View from my Ski Port
My Magnat XTC 1200 12 inch subs have Chromed and Polished Magnets
With $600 for a single amp would be an issue unless you prepared to use like 2 of the 800 watts RMS Jaycar Monoblocks - and acquire 2 x 10"s and run each off a Jaycar monoblock @ 1 ohm. That would be quite nice.
If I was in that situation, I would purchase 2 x Jaycar 800 watts RMS monoblocks & 2 x ID Max 10" Dual 2 ohms - running each off a Jaycar mono at a 1 ohm load. The ID Max's would sound damn clean especially with that sort of power.

1 idmax 12 in a sealed box will wreck em all :)
The RE's need a fair bit of power to get them going, I'd stick with the 12" ID for sure
Better off getting 1 good sub over two half priced 10". Especially for SQ.
(do as I say not as I do :D)
You wont be dissappointed with the IDmax if you have 500 w rms or 2 kw at ur fingertips.
But I would look into a better amp than jaycar for a sub of that calibre...
Peace
Tim
Definately go for the RE XXX12. They have an awesome reputation, with not chinks in it whatsoever.
Unlike megatron, i'd probably use a better, more powerful amp to run it.....actually, two jaycar monoblocks, running one voice coil each would be interesting.
the digital designs M1, caliber 2000D+ are two good amps you can consider for running any of those subs.

What u want it for? SQ or a bit of both....
Dedicated SQ I'd say ID... (not saying they are quiet subs, anything with 1000w is loud) but if you also want a menacing SPL sub i think the RE's can handle a bit more.
For SQ it really is much of a muchness, but the ID's are the 'in ' thing at the moment, and RE XXX is having supply problems in Australia so are impossible to get.

Either that or Build a Custom Perspex backed enclosure??
Show them off the way you intended..
yeah, no, but the the force to power index inside the box will change! It will affects the flux air flow of the sub's coils. You might not hear the difference, but the sub will be needingn to push out nearly 3 times its own residual 'net' weight when you have 1watt through it. Seeing as though it doesn't increase linearly, at 1000wrms, I don't even want to imagine how much net weight the sub coil and air-flux needs to move. If you want to fix this problem, you need to release the sub cone's secondary natural thermodynamic constituents. It gives you more options that way.
So basically...yeh...hope it helps

ok, well i'm probably not gonna enter any SPL comps, but i want a fair bit of bass in the boot, and to be noticed. So maybe the RE XXX would be a bit much... do u reckon a RE SX12 (1000wrms, 2000w peak) powered by 2 jaycar monoblocks (1 for each voice coil) would be enough?? or do you think an IDMAX will be better??
oh and pomejo, thanks for the offer, but i really want just 1 12" sub in a custom perspex/glass enclosure with the nice shiny magnet showing through the ski port :)

If i where you dude I would wait for the results of the FHRX BBQ day :D
IDMAX is the king but quite ugly and needs 1000WRMS to even flintch, so I went for the similar sounding with less power Boston G5 rated at 450WRMS and can use either a 1cuft sealed or 2cuft ported and with the sealed it is compatible with a GTR tunable ratiator for +3db without increasing the size of the 1cuft sealed enclosure or adding extra power :bowrofl:

All the Subs I have recommended will set you back big time in the hip pocket
I have a RE XXX 10" subwoofer and have an Earthquake PHD 3000 powering it. Yes, it's 3000 watts RMS :)
0 gauge cables, battery in boot (stock Mercedes design) everywhere with 1 farad cap. My headlights still don't like me :(
