hey guys does anyone know how to convert speaker wire signals into rca outputs? i'm looking at buying a indash tv with 5.1 output but its not pre amp (speakerwires only) which means i'd have to somehow convert this into rca to go to the amps. any ideas are there units cheaply available that will do this?

All you need is a high level --> low level converter. Available from pretty much any audio shop :)
you u need a line output converter, or low level converter...signal line driver etc etc.
its a little device where u shove ur speaker cables into, and a little gremlin inside magically turns them into RCA, low voltage signals. Fascinating really.
off the top of my head, there are good ones made by
JL audio - Cleansweep (lots of talk about it)
Phoenix Gold - SLD44
Stinger- line output converter (SALOC, SLOCII, SLOC...etcetc so on and so fourth)

curious to find out how its done. I dont see it being anything more than a few caps, resistors and maybe a transistor.

My kenwood 4 channel amp has this inbuilt, its a KAC-6401 cost me $230 a little while ago. Its a decent amp so you might want to think about buying an amp with the converter inbuilt.

i already have 3 alpine amps so won't be getting anymore  i bought a tv/ dvd headunit and apparently it does have 5.1 rca out but looking at the photos i'm not so sure  will have to wait until it arrives

Even better, use one of ur three pre outs for a signal to ur digital sound processor and then have all ur RCA leads got out of the sound processor to the right amps... :bowrofl: :bowrofl:
