Is there an easy way to check the valve timing without removing the crankcase cover?

I replaced a head gasket a year ago and always worried if I put the cam back one tooth out.

I have checked the manifold vacuum and it is good around 20 inches Hg , doesn,t show up as late valve timing.

Would the car still run reasonably if the cam was a tooth out either way, or would it cough and splutter?

take rocker cover off wind crank around to tdc pull no.1 plug out while winding clockwize see if its on compresion stroke (put your finger over hole should feel it push air out) then look at the rear rockers no.4 they should be rocking when on tdc.
