My brother in law has an injected TP that has a problem with the auto trans linkage. It looks like the linkage has moved as the park pawl wont quite engage in the transmission (but you can hear it almost engaging), the car wont turn over unless the trans lever is in neutral (or sometimes a little forward of neutral) or pushed hard up into Park.

From what I can see the neutral safety switch is in or on the transmission case, not under the t-bar. Looks to me like the way to fix this is to re-adjust the lever at the end of the trans cable to move it futher down to the end of the cable. The concern I have is that I am compensating for something else that's broken in the transmission cable/linkage assembly.

I plan to look at it closely in the next week but was wondering if someone can confirm the points above and give me any advice on what to look for. Is it just as simple as readjusting the linkage on the end of the cable ? What would have made it go out of alignment ? Could the cable have shifted at the T-Bar end ?

Thanks in advance!

although i dont know much about autos, it would make sense to me that you will just have to adjust the cable, you wont be compensaing for something, its just the cable may have stretched or something considering it may not have been adjusted in 15 years.

I say adjust it so that it works, make sure everythings tight and secure and see how you go, if you have to re-adjust it in a week or so then you may have problems.

You adjust it from where the cable meets the lever at the gearbox.
But generally you shouldn't need to touch it; only adjust when installing new GB etc.

Chances are, the rubber bushing that the cable attaches to the lever with is probably flaked.

You could go to Mitsu & buy a new rubber bushing (grommet?) to replace it.

Or wanted something that lasted longer... made my own with a
5mm slice of fuel tubing captured with 2 large metal washers.
Lasted me like 10+ yrs after that.

From the quick look I had at where the cable connects to the linkage, there did seem to be a lot of play around the end of the linkage lever so Magnette, your idea about a worn bushing could well be correct. I like the idea of the fuel pipe and the washers !

That's what one learns from owning a 1988 TN "since new"... lol

Just to close this thread off, the linkage problem got fixed today. The bush that connects the cable from the selector lever with the transmission lever had disintegrated. The cable end was floating around in a much too large hole.

One new nylon bush from Mitsubishi later and now the parking pawl works and the car start in Park as well neutral. No adjustment of the cable end required.

Thanks for all the help.
