Ok, im a new member so hi. Now I was wondering if anyone could help with some info about a few Magna's I have been thinking about buying TR and TS model's. I currently hane a TP 89 model and it's time to update it's done 240000km and is starting to give me a few probs, that said it has still been very reliable. I am going to look at a 94 elite on saturday, but Im put off by the fact it's done over 200000km, should I worry about this? How many Km's can I expect out of it before it gives me a issues? Also after I look at that one I will be veiwing a 95 exectiuve with 155000km, What should I look out for and what do I need to worry about? Any help would be great. Thanks in advance.

how many k's before it gives you issues?
could 100000 could be 200000, 2nd gens in my own experience are a heap of junk.
I got a 93 TR had about 164000ks when i purchased it 2 years ago, it was about $5700.
Ive now spent more than 5700 in fixing this thing up... reco engine, services, tyres, etc etc. its a pain in the bum. everything has died. ahhh

2nd gens are known to last over 300,00ks it just depends how much you have looked after it! Check for water in the oil thats what was wrong with one i looked ast the otherday...ask them how many times they have changed the timing belt it should be once every 100,000ks if im correct. Just make sure there aint any rust anywhere even if its just a little spot because rust spreads. Check the suspension and all that normal stuff

I've seen engines go over 400k kms, it just depends on how well it's been looked after. Easy way to tell is take several for test drives and just feel the difference. Check for rust (havn't really seen this as a biggy on magnas), oil leaks, check log books etc. the usual stuff.
Also Ant0ne what you just listed is applicable for most if not all cars...
Also where in vic are you? if you are unsure i, or another vic member would be happy to come with you if you're not sure?

as everyones already stated, car will last as long as you maintain it properly with regular servicing and wotnot. Guy up the road from me has a TR 6cyl which is sitting on about 345,000kms, hasnt missed a service and hasnt had a major problem in its life. Mine doesnt do too bad being a 4cylinder on 220,000kms, with really only minor problems and the only major thing being the timing chain which every 4cylinder has had done at least once.
Also you should say what your looking at, is it a six or a four? if its a six then your probably better off getting a car which has just had its 200,000km service rather than one which hasnt and is sitting on 190,00kms or such. For more info on the 6's youd have to ask others, tho i would recomend getting a six over a four.
In the fours listen for any kind of rattling in the timing chain, tappet noise and oil which is leaking from somewhere besides the rocker cover. Check the oil to make sure they havnt put some really thick oil in there which some guys do to cover up timing chain noise. Make sure the tranny changes gears smoothly with no real jerking and that the tranny fluid is clear, reddish and doesnt smell burnt. Only other thing is make sure it doesnt blow any bluish smoke out the exhaust.
And Ant0ne, if you hate your car so much why not sell then get a similar age commy or falcon, being about VP or EB and see what kind of running costs those give you. Also you may have just bought a car which was a dud and hadnt been serviced at all, so dont generalise by saying they all suck fat hairy balls.
