I'm interested in getting a set of these when I get my car (and yes yes the reason i am after a set is just for a better appearence if nothing else) but can someone tell me as to what are the Pro's & Con's with the headlights?? It just seems as thought some people think they are good, some think they're bad?!
I presume that because they are from a higher spec model that they should be a better light if anything !?

I put parabolics in my TH sports cos they are better looking, the light output from them is shocking though even after i put phillips plus 50 globes in them (i live in the country) the standard lights definately have a better output BUT even then its nothing great when ya compare it to a BA falcon or VZ commodores lights.
Heathyoung will agree with me on this, he's the light man.

Cheers guys :D
If you want better viewing at night.
Stick with the executive model headlamp assemblies. The parabolics are horribly contructed with black spots and light flare.. (Stanley made these lights not Hella) They were so dodgy in the design they just reversed the left hand light to make the right one without thought of the light patterns.
About the only thing theyre good for is looks.

Dont forget there hasnt been a revision done on the magna base model headlights since they were conceived..
The BA and VZ models are designs made with alot better packages to test the light before even making them.. Better technology = better abilities to create more defined lighting.

Yep - exactly Bain.
Terrible headlamp design the parabolics.
Very ordinary. Makes a great base for a HID retrofit though.
Mind you, I am trying to shoehorn E46 Bixenons into a 2 piece at the moment and the solenoid for the shield is being a major PITA to fit.

The $380 spent on my parabolics for my TS was money well spent!!! The low beam of the stock headlights did the job, and the high beam was alright. Well I put a set of KS parabolics in (although the guy i bought them off had put new reflectors in), and the low beam is fantastic, a lot wider that the stock headlights, and the high beam is alright. I then put in some hyper white globes, and its awesome

ok i'll get some then and give them a go then, Wider beam sounds good for roo spotting which I do a lot of. If i don't like the light output I can always refit my stockies and resell the parras. These have been on the wish list for a while and now i'm in a position to spend a few $$$ on more nice bits.

There is a set going on ebay at the moment, in fact, they are coming from the same guy who I bought mine from, so they will have new reflectors (really shiney). About the only 'problem' is that the plug for the parkers on the parabolics is different, but easy to fix (just cut your old plug off and put the new one on), and it used bayonnet style parker bulbs, rather than the traditional wedge

It boils down to the respective EXPORT markets in regards to the 2nd gen vs 3rd gen paras. The 2nd gen cars had to comply with European regs hence have very good headlights, Mitsubishi even made a big issue over the headlights at the time. The 3rd gen cars only had to comply with Japanese and US DOT regulations and thus have very average lights. All that said, I adjusted mine today and now they are much better, no real hotspots and fair side illumination. I might have to drop them down slightly though as I fear they might be a tiny bit high. One thing I like is the ability to adjust both high and low beam seperatly. Although I do need new lights as my lens are completely shot. Tempting to stick a pair of Hella 90mm rounds in another set, just need to find how much $$.

I have done some serious research into fitting the 90mm rounds...
The biggest hurdle was the cost, as shown below...
$269.26 for the 1029-12V DE H7 Low Beam Headlamp Assembly, 12V
$255.43 for the 1030-12V FF H7 Main Beam Headlamp Assembly with Position Light, 12V
You add the fibreglass (since you really need to fit these so they are not internal to a headlamp, a-la Xr6 style, and you are looking at some serious $$
There are a few options with mounting - you can only use the two piece headlamps, as there is no feasible way of mounting the blinker any other way (and no neat, ADR legal aftermarket blinkers that fit) so this leaves you with the Parabolic assembly (which is very tight, especially with the shroud, but has independent high/low beam adjusters, OR the standard hella executive one - bigger body, far better plastics.
I was halfway through making the adjustment plates and fibreglass moulds when I found out the prices for these modules - ouch.
Other problem is that it will never be adr approvable anyway - because the position lamp (parker) is integrated to the main beam reflector, and the main beam reflector is more than 300mm from the edge of the vehicle - this includes the fairings/flares (not fair)...
I found that once again that despite the non-adr compliance of the HID retrofit, it gives the best results for your $$$ than anything else.
Cheers
