View Full Version : Best way to C.A.I a TP?

I recently changed the carby on my stock TP over to a 32/36 Weber. This means that the Air Cleaner Housing will not fit on top anymore. Oh well, at least it is an excuse for me to try installing a Cold Air Intake on it :D

I had a quick look under the hood for ideas on where I should get the air source from, but couldn't see any places that had direct access to outside air. Would the passenger side port that the stock Air Cleaner Housing uses to get its air from be enough to feed a CAI?

I do not know that much about cars, so this will be my first attempt at doing a CAI.
Has anyone else installed a CAI on a TP and have tips or advice on doing a CAI for a TP?
I am after advice on: the best place to get the air from, most suitable filter (eg, one of those pod type filters installed somewhere along the line, or a filter suited for the top of the carby), and installation tips.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

I'm not sure if you can route it so on a carby, but there's a nice port that EFI cars can access, next to the battery, behind the drivers side headlight.

However, the stock port location may offer enough airflow.

the standard "hole in the side wall" for stock carbs should work alright, it'd be able to get plenty of fresh air from there, it'd just be a case of makin an airbox for ya filter.

let me know how you go as i'm lookin at doin similar.

i know a guy that did quite a good lil mod for the side carby intake. but not very legal.
he removed the standard parkers, put the parker lights into the headlights... simple mod, then put the modern day side indis on the guards, and make a lil kinda snorkel thing leading to the intake. the drivers side was just a dummy but looked the same. worked quite well and looked good.

well you can nothing stopping you, but if you get pulled over good chance of a defect cause you have altere'd how the lights work. unlike my indicators, i still use the same housing and they still flash orange, shifting the lights alters it from factory and, well you know.

It might be my only option, im not really keen on rearranging the whole car to find an air hole. Sorry Astron Boy, its too much trouble :D

Just bought a Redline Sports Air Filter suited to fit on top of my 32/36. When I get around to it, I will isolate this and try running a CAI from the hole in the side wall to it. Filter is fine on its own for now.

Deary
you had to remove the air con junk tho.
easiest way is bonnet scoop in all honesty. being up the back near the firewall make it kinda hard, and theres so much junk at the front end.

Looks like Hydroxinol has more work planned for his Dad the next time he comes home for a visit :D .
Guess I,d better visit the hardware stores and see what sort of corrugated piping is available, probably a rubber pipe would be better.

When I get some free time I might head down to Bunnings and check out what ducting materials they have. :P

Hardest part of my CAI will be Isolating the Air Filter. Would a PVC Box or something over the Carby be a bad idea, in regards to heat? Or should I stick with sheet metal or something?

Has anyone had the idea to put a small bonnet scoop over the airbox? like a patrol scoop or get a panel beater to punch a good looking slot into the bonnet and just make ducting into the airbox or would this screw with the MAF cause the air is almost being fored in there (at high speed the air would go through rather quick)

bonnet scoop seems the easyest way to do it
