i was looking at replacing my 2x12" Pioneer TSW-1201C subs (500WRMS each) and am having trouble finding a suitable replacement...

i need something that is able to run 1000WRMS @ 2ohm (what the amp puts out) and one of the only reasonable replacements i have found is the Alpine Type X (10 or 12)

both the 10" & 12" are dual 4ohm, 1000WRMS each, so a single version of each would be possible, but would there be a big difference from 1 or 2 subs that have the same power output (1x1000 or 2x500)?

i mainly listen to punk/metal/rock but also enjoy dance/drum&bass/trance
so anything that has nice SQ but still loud enough that i wont have to push them to distort

any opinions are welcomed :D

thanks in advance

haha couldn't get much more specific? :D

like i said the only requirements i have is it uses the power the amp can provide, and sound decent while doing it...

would 1 sub be as loud as 2 subs with the same power? as 1 sub will always be lighter and easier to install...

Two has more cone space there fore more Bass ability, one sub with Twice as much power will only go louder.. not deeper...
Equality is the key..

i personally love the Kicker Solobaric series either the L5 or L7 series, or you can go the flagship ($$$) Solo-X series. but you will have to get a new box tho...... cos they be square

all depends on how much money you want to spend? whats your price range and we'll give you some ideas.

IDMAX!!!

Other options: Brahma (if you can find one), TDX 12, DD9912, Kicker, etc etc....

But If you've got the kish kash definetly look for an idmax. Awesome SQ and will suck up the power no problems.

i'll probably end up looking at spending up to $700 on a single sub, or up to $1000 on a pair?

its all still research at the moment, (i dont even have my current subs in a box atm  )

designing and building sub boxes for me is as easy as measuring what shape i want, then screwing it together (fancy computer cuts it) so i dont mind building different boxes to try different setups

i'm upgrading to 12" crossfire subs ... $699 each i think they are ... hopefully they'll go harder than the pioneers i'm using now

yeah i reckon thats possibly the go, as SQ is probably higher on my priorities, although i love it really loud :D

so... that narrows it down a bit... 10-12" single sub, 1000WRMS... 2ohm

I think most people know where this is going... $700 on a single sub and 2 ohm load.. perfect DVC Boston G5, 1cuft box and very low but loud SQ,

$1000 on 2 subs, well $700 on the G5 and $250 on the GTR to go with it for +3db, im giving mine 600WRMS and it loves it, the passive radiator will give you the depth of having 2 x 12's with actually only having to power one of them. Although only rated at 450WRMS the guys at Boston like to hook it up to the GT28 which is 700WRMS in its lowest output and with the single 12inch DVC they hook it up with around 1300WRMS @ 14.4V  .

"$1000 on 2 subs, well $700 on the G5 and $250 on the GTR to go with it for +3db"

huh? your running two different subs?

Yep I would look at the Boston over the Alpine for sure...

I would look at Aperiodic mats before drone cones...

Only because it's something I'v been wanting to try out ever since I heard about Angelo Kanci's BMW.

Edit: Ascension, the other sub acts as a passive radiator. Much like a ported box but instead it uses another sub to extend the low freq response. Im pretty sure it doesnt give a very flat response though. So you usually find a trough jsut above where the ported enclosure would roll off.

best way to get low freq response and keep it smooth is to find a sub with a low FS (resonant frequency) To keep it smooth use a sealed box.

Depends what you want though... Ported boxes are more efficient and louder.

Sorry let me clarify. You put the G5 in a 1cuft box but you want gains without porting the box ( which you can do.. 2cuft is the going size for ported ) then you can use a GTR radiator. What it is is a cone structure that doesnt have a magnet. You put the radiator in the sealed box and it acts like a second sub by moving from the air pushed by the G5.

Since it is not powered it is not perfectly in phase otherwise you would get a 6db gain but for 3db gain and maintaining a very flat response curve that you get from the sealed box but just 3db louder they are quite nice. If the ported response was flater then that would be the way to go but this is a different way to maintain a tiny 1cuft sealed box and have added depth. You can also tune the radiators to suit music.

If you get a 12" Type X and wire it up to the MRD-M1005 you wont be let down, can handle whatever I through at it (Rap & DNB). Put this bass tone song on the other day, called 33 hertz, really bloody gets down deep into your eardrums. Its funny its really not that loud, but the change on my dash goes nuts and it sometimes hurts your ears.

Listen to the man and go and audition all of the above speakers, especially the ID Max and DD99**. Both are a little more than the $700 you want to spend on 1 sub but both are excellent woofers, miles in front of most other subs in their classes!

The IDMAX is more suited to SQ setups and sounds best (IMO) in a 1-1.3cuft sealed enclosure. The DD (Digital Designs) is more of an SPL beast, but almost sounds as good as the IDMAX and performs best (IMO) in a larger ported enclosure.

DD woofers hold more SPL records (national and international) than any other brand sub. Image Dynamics IDMAX 12" woofer also has a similar status in SQ competition. The new Boston G5's also look like a great sub but I havent had the chance to audition on yet.

Personally I would (and did) choose the IDMAX :D

unfortunately being in SA, i'm veeery limited to what brands i can choose, as most of the stores only stock more of the main-stream stuff  and i don't really wanna just take peoples advice and order something from interstate to find its not up to my liking...

another one i've had my eye on is the Eclipse SW9122 but again, havent known anyone to have/hear one to know what its like!

Fair enough... I guarantee you wont have a problem with the idmax though...

Maybe try and get to some CAA meets... (im not sure if they have many in SA)
