Today I got a Lukey exhaust and K&N pod kit for my 2001 Verada Ei.
I was just pulling into an undercover carpark, windows down, listening to the sweet growl (damn it sounds great!) :D when i noticed something else... :(
When i turn my steering wheel I can hear a (not real quiet) rhythmical scraping sound...it sounds kinda like rubbing discs, but louder than it should... Its probably the discs but I'm not sure.
Its still under new car warranty, an I'll get it checked out this week, I'm just curious as to what it may be, it sure doesnt sound normal.
Any ideas as to what it may be? Possible solutions? Cost?

CV Joints most likely. They will make a grinding noise when you turn. To check, go to a quiet carpark, and apply full lock one direction and listen for the noise, then go the other way. If you get it while turning its your CV's.

I have a similar problem, but mine seems to be coming from the rear drivers side..... i asked my old mechanic what it was and to fix it - "oh its just road noise"..... i think i know what road noise sounds like (its definately metal sounding, and not ashpalty like) the rubbing sound is more noticable at low speeds (5-15kph), obviously.....
anyone have any ideas?

perhaps also a mud guard? cos i know when i changed my rims to a 9" wide profile, i get rub a bit into the wall of the arches? if that makes any sense.

yeh i know what you mean. I had that problem when i put 98 magna alloys on my TR (14inch to 16inch). I never noticed but plastic casing just inside the wheel arch had buckled pushing it around 5-10 cm closer to the tyre so when ever i turned left the tyre would grind up against the plastic. I fixed it by drilling a hole in the casing and tieing rope from the hole to a bracket holding the front fender on.
Did the job for me.... cheap and easy :D
I love the cheap and easy mods :P
My favourite with all my old cars with masking tape....
Wiring, body work, holes in windshields....... never could have enough of it :P
My whole car was held together by it and i tell you what!!!!

Thats probably the reason it aint on the road no more
I didnt know you had a scraping noise with cv joints being worn?
How far worn do they have to be to hear that noise??

Being 2001 I would be very surprised if CV were a problem.
Have your front brakes checked, could be a small stone or someting caught in the caliper.
With your new exhaust, was it just a muffler or whole system. Could be someting has been accidently moved there as well.

This forum rocks!
A couple of hours after a post and already I have heaps of possible solutions.
Cheers BOoya, I wish it was just fat rims rubbing against guards :) Rite now I have the stock rims and suspension kit so i doubt it is that.
I guess I could check the exhaust, Its only a muffler (i have read the forums a bit b4 i did anything :)) and i watched it installed, nothin seemed to change there...
Cheers 'AussieMagna'
I hope its not the CV joints...it did sound kinda like what 'TheDifference' described, I have only noticed it at low speeds, driving up an indoor carpark...and it seems to be coming from the front so it could be the CVs...I thought CVs were more of a clicking noise though...
I hope its nothin big :( be wrong to have to go without my new ride for any amount of time
MadMagna, Stones in the brakes? how would I check that? I don't really wanna go pullin things to bits just yet...especially not if it was a B**** to get back together...

where does the scrapping sound come from? front or rear?
if it comes from the from i don't know, but
if it comes from the rear it might be your parking brake line being jammed/strecthed or something, when the zorts was welded into your car.

the sound is gone...
I didnt find the source of the problem, but hopefully it won't come back
Cheers for the help.
!!!!
i noticed this after my 1500km service last week and thought it was them greasing something up and scraping on the discs. BUT ITS NOT!
i noticed its worse today ! so i got out and walked beside the car (with another driver) and its not cv joints its definately comming from the back left but i can still hear it definately loud from the right.
its a scrapping/chaffing noise im taking it in tomorrow and they can fix it because its definately not rd noise or brakes because i get the noise whether im braking or not.
how new is your car mine has just clicked over 3000 kms and ive had it 3 weeks.

fooya thinks it might be the handbrake or a warped disk , handbrake being the more obvious and likely of the 2. tomorrow ill book in for a warantee job.

it could definately be the hand brake.
If it was one side it could be something else, but as it comes from both sides it could be the handbrake that needs backing off a touch.
My car has 32000 on the clock. The sound in mine is gone now, still it'd be good to hear what it is in your car, in case it happens to me again...
