 hi, was just wondering, am looking at buying my first magna , and have a few questions, I have the option of buying either a jan 02' magna advance (no tiptronic) with all extra's including mags and rear spoiler. or,
aug 02' exec with tiptronic box, more basic car,but a series 2 car
are there any noticable advantages between these cars, I prefer the jan 02' advance,
are there any differances in engine or suspenssion etc
have heard the earlier boxes had a few probs, is this so in the jan 02'?
any advice would be great!

Series 2 TJ onwards had 155Kw opposed to the 148Kw(i think) of the pre series 2 3.5's. I believe it got a revised cam profile - but it could just as easily been an upgraded ECU.

Really depends on what you want from the car. Based on the above I'd say get the series2. I've got an Oct 02 build exec and like the extra control you get from the tippy (once you get used to it) - and if you spend a fair amount of time on here, you'll probably end up wanting to upgrade your wheels anyway + spoilers do less than nothing on a FWD.

Only other thing worth considering IMO is colour coding of side skirts and wing mirrors. If the advance didn't get body coloured side skirts & mirrors it's a mute point anyway - but I'm sure you'll agree that it makes a huge difference to the appearence of the car. FYI it cost me a couple of hundred $$ to get mine colour coded - and to this day I think it's the best money I've spent on the car.

Also - just a word of advise, if you buy a 2nd hand auto magna - I highly recommend getting the transmission flushed and renewed right away.

Depends if features or fun are more important to you :) The tiptronic box is a 5 speed but its predecessor is only a 4 speed box so you'll get more response and better accelleration from the shorter ratios in the 5 speed.

On the other hand, the Advance has climate control, power windows and other goodies so it'll be a more comfortable car.

You shouldn't have any specific problems with either of the TJ gearboxes.

Earlier ones were 150kW. And the TH 3.5s were 147kW.

Dont mean to be picky - but I'll clarify a couple of points.

Series 2 exec got a 4 spd tippy

Many also had power windows all round - I was under the impression this was baseline standard in the TJII, but some members have reported otherwise.

mmmmmm..... climate control would be nice - and it's a prick to retrofit!

Did they? I thought they made the 5 speed standard kit in the series 2s.. oh well.. in my defence, I drive a manual! :shifty:

I'm pretty sure power windows isn't standard fare though.. but hey, I arsed up the transmission bit so I could be wrong here too ;)

yea thanks, I had a run in both cars and I think I'll go the series 2 it doesnt have the xtras as much but i spose re-sale might look better if its a series 2 , it doesnt have the painted xtras so i may get them sprayed. I also liked the tiptronic idea, it should work a treat with towing, I imaginethat you would be able to drive it a bit more like a manual, in those situations.

thanks for the feedback, Im new to this thread thing.

Even in the TL/TW series the 5 speed auto is only available on the VR, VR-X, AWD models and Veradas's, the ES and LS get 4 speed tiptronic. Executive and Advance in TJ never got the 5 speed.

I wouldn't discount the Advance, it will definately have 2 airbags and ABS, which are all a must in my books. And in the real world, the tiptronic is nice to play with sometimes but its not really a big deal, in my opinion anyway. Also the Advance has "LPG compatible" motor from the factory if you ever want to convert it.

Maybe the best thing would be to find a Series 2 Advance..then you get the safety features AND the series 2 goodies...

Definately. I owned a 2000 GT Forrestor without tiptronic and the car was deadset boring to drive. I tried to change it manual-like but it's too figgity when you're laying down the law to a fresh challenger.

My AWD has the 5pd tippa and it's pretty good for what it is. I have days when I couldn't give a rats about the price of fuel and I'll pop it over into tipa mode and hold every gear, and down change on every hill and gas stomp

Gives great flexibility without having to really own two cars. Auto mode for family, Tipa mode for fun. Do it. The exec is lighter than the Advance too. Not weighed down by the electric window equipment etc. The kids'll just sit there winding them up and down like Bart Simpson would anyways.

you got that in one. Interesting about the gas though ,The valve seats are the right stuff for gas aye?
Cant see why the 155 kw series 2 wouldnt be the same anyway i'll take your word for it.
thanks again.
p.s. all the other stuff on the advance is probably only something else to go wrong eg elec windows, and ambiant readout, time for a coffee, stuff.
cheers

I'm not sure I am doing this right but we have recently purchased a TL Magna and are very happy, however the car was sold to us without the owners manual! The digital clock needs to be reset and I can't see how to do this. Could someone provide me with this information as it is driving me insane not having the correct time. Many thanks KB

Turn the ignition key to the ACC position. Press the down arrow button for setting hours, and the up arrow button for setting minutes. To reset the minutes to zero, press the MODE button.
