You've got a couple of options.
Option 1: Upgrade the muffler only. If your TH is an exec then this alone *should* deliver some nice gains (up to 7Kw at the Flywheel if you believe some people). If you go for a traditional oval muffler (some reputable brand names are Lukey, Redback, X-force, Magnaflow) you should notice a more agressive note - but not terribly too much louder. If you choose a cannon style muffler it will be significantly louder (in my opinion neway). Many people don't like cannon mufflers because of the image of the 'ricer' 4 cylinder - but you really can't compare the sound of a v6 to a 4, cannon or not. Muffler only should set you back between $200 and $250 on average.
Option 2: Upgrade the majority of the exhaust piping (cat back) to 2.5 inch mendrel bent piping in addition to a muffler upgrade. This should give better performance and a deeper louder sound to the car. Redback make prefab 'cat back' exhaust systems for these cars - and most exhaust places will either fit a system like this or build one to suit from pre bent piping. This option will probably set you back between $500 - $650 on average depending on the muffler you choose.
It sounds like option 1 suits your budget better - but my advise, if you are planning additional performance mods in the future, you're better off saving til you can afford a full 'cat back' system, as it will be a much better base for further mods - as well as saving you on labour if you eventually go back to get cat back piping fitted at a later date.
