Hi Magna owners
I need a set of new tyres.
I have std 16x7 inch mags
I am looking at Bridgestone ER30 or Kumho ? or Pirelli P6
I don't want a noisy tyre.

What size should I fit on these rims. I have 215/60 at the moment. Something wider that won't alter the speedo would suit me.

I would appreciate some real first hand experience here.

I am an average joe driver that loves his car.

Thanks

Jim

the pirelli p6 is pretty good value for money. very low tyre noise and an excellent comfort tyre. used to be standard equipment for merc e-class too. and more importantly, it's 94H... minimum requirement for 3rd gen onwards magnas.

/edit: if i don't recall wrongly, jap/korean tyres use softer compounds, so better grip but shorter life. european tyre manufacturers use harder compounds and hence longer tyre life. not a big difference though... just some trivia :D

ER30s (stock fitment on Verada) are dead quiet, much quieter than Michelin Energys.

I've got the current Pirelli P6 "All Season" and while its great for grip etc, on the Magna its not as quiet as I expected from having Pirellis in the past. So far its wearing very well though. Either the Bridgestone or the Kumho are quieter on a Magna, but the Kumho is pretty ordinary for grip at the front. There's a new Turanza - ER50 - out you might want to consider as well.

BTW you may want to double check your specs - I think you'll find standard AWD rims are 16 X 6.0

Hi folks and thanks for the replies.

I am sure with all the reading that I did that the sports model AWD has 16x7 inch rims.

is there a way of checking. I suppose I will have to take a wheel off?

The VR AWD model is based on the Magna VR sedan and gains the VR standard features such as sports suspension and free-flowing exhaust system, along with all the above standard features, but gets 215/60R16 Bridgestone Grid II tyres, and 10-spoke 16" X 7" alloy wheels as additional features.

Maybe I was wrong as I only have the TJ 11 model with 7 spoke wheels.

Is this the car in your Avatar? The quote above refers to a TL or TW and the wider rim is because its a VR not because its an AWD. With the TJs, only the Sports rim is 16 X 7 (the Sports being the equivalent of the VR) - all other 16" were 16 X 6. Quickest way to check is via your spare in the boot - the rim size is cast into the brake side of the rim - which is the side UP in the boot of course.

I paid about $165 each for a set of 215/60/R16 95Vs back in February when they were 'Hot Stuff' fresh off the boat! If you're getting that size now for $125 its a bargain though they're probably the 'H' rating at that price.

Ok thanks guys.

I checked the good old manual and Yes, The AWD and Sports version gets the 16x6 rims.

Next question. The recommended size is 215/60/16, what wider size can I go to that will retain the original diameter?, do I have to go to something like 225/55/16, which would be a lot more expensive from what I have read?

Hey there mate.
I have a KH which had the 215 60 16 and like you wanted wider for more grip and looks.

Went the Bridgestone ER30's in the 225 55 16 which keeps the same diameter. We sat them next to the origional 215 60 and they both sit at the same height. They are so quiet and look great. 10mm might not sound like much but they look much wider than the 215's. They should come with all Verada's. There are no side effects at all from the wider tyre. No tram tracking, the side wall is still nice and firm and not sloppy. The grip is also much better. Takes so much more to spin the wheels in the wet. Sometimes they dont even spin. The ER30's are the quietest tyre you will find for your car. I spent months asking countless tyre factories on their opinon on the quietest tyre. In the end, the majority said stick to the ER30's.

I am currently in a battle with Pirelli to get a refund or new tyres for my KE and Mazda Astina. I put the P6000's on both of them and the noise comming from the tyres is incredible. They were quiet for the first 10,000 odd k's then they both started to give off a humm noise in a big way. In the KE it is so loud, you have to raise your voice to speak to the person next to you NO KIDDING. It even starts to give you a headache after a while and yes, all the balances and alignments are fine. Had them checked multiple times.

If you want quiet and looks then go the 225 55 16 Bridgys ER30's.

Can get a pic if you want to see them.

They were more expensive though. Will dig out how much i paid. Was close to $180 a tyre i think but will double check.

Oh yeah, the 225 ER30's are also a V rating.

Yes it is a lot more expensive and no its not quite the right height anyway. Your tyre shop will advise on this more, but basically if you wanna stay completely legal you're stuck with that tyre size on that rim. Taking into account that a 215 tyre on a six inch rim is already 'one wider' as such - on a six inch rim the basic fit is a 195 or a 205 - and the difficulty getting 225 tyres in the 94+ load rating... whaddya going to do - Meh!

I was advised by my tyre supplier that I shouldn't put 225's on a 6" rim because it would adversely affect the sensitivity of the steering.

But hey, who needs steering on a drag strip :bowrofl:

The 225 tyre fits fine on the standard Verada rims. Doesn't look too wide for the rim.
Also, there is absolutely no difference in the steering feel at all which i have to say i was suprised about but if you drove a Verada with 215's on it then 225's on it i guarantee you couldnt pick the difference at all.
Yeah it is true that if you go to wide for a rim then it feels so much worse and handles worse than what it should be because of the flex in the bulge in the tyre wall but the 225 55 doesnt have that bulge on the Verada rim and it handles exactly the same if not better than the 215.

Also, i still have a 215 60 as a spare and i sat it next to my 225 55 on the car and they are to the naked eye the same height giving the speedo the same reading.

The aspect ratio being 60 or 55 isnt the height of the tyre walll. It is measured as a percentage of the width of the tyre. All very confusing.

Hi there, regarding the quitest tyre for Magnas, I would definitely go for the Yokohama A500 Aspec-DB. They are available in 215/60/16 for around $140 each, although that was when they were on special.

I have found them to be by far the quietest on a KH Verada, even quieter than the original Bridgestone ER30's, which lasted a good 55,000km. As you guys are all aware, the ER30 is already a very quiet tyre, but when the Yokohamas were first fitted, I couldn't believe how silent the interior of the car was, even at 100km/h.

They've since done 50,000km with still good tread left.

The only downside is the wet weather grip, which is not the best.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for all the info.

I might play safe and go with 215/60 anyway on my 6" rims.

I can get them in ER30 ( H rating ) and ER592. The ER592 is a V rated tyre and are supposed to be be quiet, and give good grip and braking potential.

Has anyone had ER592's on ya Magna??

Not sure about the ER592.

Now this is just an assumption, but from past experience, I have found that tyres that excel in wet weather conditions tend to be a little on the loud side.

The humble RE92, which is supposedly the predecessor of the ER592, would be quieter, although it may not be dynamically as superior.

I bought the new Yokohama C-Drive tyres 215/60/16. The tyre type is AC01 and cost me about $150 ea (part of wheel and tyre package). Load rating 99V !!! Good grip, quiet and happy with result.
