View Full Version : Too much sand?

Whats the effect of having too much sand in a paper air filter. I decided to clean mine out yesterday and couldnt believe how much sand was in it. There was a whole sandpit and an insect burial ground lol . Would a blocked filter increase fuel consumption? I also heard that in some cases with seriously dirty paper filters that dirt can be pulled through the fibres of the paper. There was so much I had to take a picture. Its hard to see it all in the pic because the stupid file size limit meant I had to reduce the resolution to 90% and the jpeg quality to '2'. Pic does not include sand that fell in the box while i was removing it, sand that came out while carrying it and sand that the wind blew away while getting the camera.

Prolly gonna get a K&N panel filter to replace it. Do those change fuel consumption in any way? Fuel consumption is my big worry here as I drive from cannington to rockingham (35min drive) every day to get to uni...

thats ridiculous, that much sand cannot be doing good for your car! Go out and buy a K & N and just make sure you clean it often :)

i changed to a K&N panel filter and a cold air intake all at once but i saw a massive jump in distance travelled per tank of fuel, eg before hand i was getting about 400kms per tank, afterwards i was getting about 500-550 plus its more powerfull, well it feels that way.

for future reference DO NOT pour sand onto your roof, it will scratch it.

Clean that **** up ASAP!

It would suck for the sand to jam up your TB. When i had my commie, sand got through the filter and jammed up my carby (some how) and was stuck at 3000RPM

Supacheap probably don't 'keep stock' but will certainly be willing to order in for you. Could take a week to get to Perth. Alternatively - you'd think RPW would keep a couple in stock, since they specialise in mitsubishi's and all.

Before buying i'd ring around a few spare parts places and get prices some places are just stoopid with what they charge. Try checking out the sponsors section on here might be a good start

Getting one from Repco. Getting ripped off a bit but its just way too much effort to check every shop in the whole of Perth just to save $50...

Philcom is in SA....

Repco ordered the wrong filter. The ordered one for TE 4cyl somehow (even though I even told them my engine model, they still got it wrong) but they rang around and pointed me to a place in Osborne Park that has them much cheaper than repco was advertising. Ill have to go tomorrow 'cause I have to earn my meager pay tonight.

Got one from Go Gear for $107 and a recharge kit for $25. Made a nice difference. Dont have to hold the clutch as much on takeoff as the engine doesnt choke as much taking off. I think my old paper filter was really suffocating the engine.
