Hi,
I did a 5000k service on my vr-x yesterday, now i'm wondering if i have overfilled it or not, as the damn thing doesnt have a low and full line, it just has these little indents, anyway the oil level is sitting roughly in the middle of the full indent, is that full, or is full just below the indent, or above it or in the middle where my oil is
can someone help me here

the 2 indents are maximum and minimum lines
someone correct me if im wrong but im pretty sure it should be just under the maximum line, aslong as its not above this line, or under the minimum line its fine, hey that rhymed

What would be the problem if it were above the maximum line?

as far as i know if you go 2 far over the maximum line which means u have to much oil in your car it would just leak out of somewhere.
not 100% sure, But They do put a Maximum Line There For A Reason.

depends how much, if its just a little bit over then it wont do much, the excess oil will probably burn off anyway, if its well over tho you run the risk of the oil pressure blowing the engine seals
if you have way too much oil in it, the crank shaft can whip the oil like a whisk making it all bubbly and foamy, and when that gets sucked up your oil intake.... thats bad, alot of air, not much oil. but you have to WAY overfill it

Excess oil don't just "burn off"; your pistons' oil scraper ring will still be doing their job.
A little bit too much oil (say 5mm above 'high' on dipstick) is probably OK.
If its waaay too much, there's a big chance that the crank will be swimming in it.
The crank slapping the pool of oil causes pretty bad destructive forces.
If its waaaay waaaaaaay waaaaaaay too much - like its filled all the way to the rockers,
the engine will be in hydraulic lock and I'd be surprised if you can even turn it over.

if you fill your car up to the rockers with oil ur to stupid and dont deserve to drive. u would need to use about 10L of oil i suspect.

There's always that email story about the Dealer's Receptionist who went out back to help.
Mechanic tells her to "fill up the oil via the filler hole, until the dipstick shows full".
So she does - she fills it up (garage has those bulk oil dispensers) right up to the brim 'cos
that's "H" when she puts the dipstick in... into the rocker cover filler hole. lol
(methink you'll need like 25-30L... :P )

haha thats funny, remember seeing, that worlds worst driver show, there was a maintainance section, they had to check the oil, blonde gets out of car, trys to open bonnet, cant open it because she didnt pull the lever inside, 5 minutes later she has the bonnet open. she has instructions for checking oil on peice of paper, she reads outloud locate the dipstick, she cracks up laughing, whats a dipstick.... 10 minutes later she find the dipstick, she pulls it out, wipes all the oil of on a clean rag, then looks at the end of it and proudly states, ITS EMPTY,..... some one suggests she puts it back in the pulls it out again. she does so and its fine. so now comes the checking the coolant, she reads the instructions out, locate the radiator and top up with water. she lookes around. sees the oil cap on the rocker cover, opens it up and proceeds to fill it up with water. Some people are incredibly stupid.

It takes about 15 litres of oil to fill to the top of an engine.
Slight over filling say anything upto a cm over the max line is ok, its what they call running oil rich, increases oil pressure slightly other then that it causes no harm. Alot of times it actually better to have a bit more especially if you drive your car hard around corners, Keeps more oil at the pick up point

Must be the same as...
Blonde walks into dealer's spareparts counter, asks for a new 71O cap.
"Sorry ma'am, but I can't find any part numbered seven-ten..."

I was at a shopping centre one day and this young guy came up to me and asked for my help about where the dip stick goes. He took it out but couldnt remember where he got it from. He was in a Nissan Exa. I asked him what the prob was and he said nothing, just that he was adding oil as the car leaked a bit and needed to be filled on a reg basis. On the ground i saw 2, 5 litre bottles of oil. Was a bit worried at this stage.
I asked him how much he had put in, and he said both the bottles and the oil still isnt at the top of the dip stick.
I just said to him, i suggest you dont start it and get a tow. He said nah, he does it all the time. I said sweet, well it only needs to be filled to the full line, not to the top of the dip stick. I lashed at that stage.
Some people will never cease to amaze me.
