View Full Version : Better ideas for my baby
So yeah, my poor little magna has started to puff some smoke on start up when its cold so its time for a rebuild. I'm jumping at it now as I need to get my timing chain done and I want it done before I do a 2000 Km trip over xmas, now this is what I'm planning to get done while its in getting its stuff sorted.
Full rebuild (gets bored i'm thinking 2.8, if its safe) gets a balance too
Extractors and cat(about time)
Fuel press reg
Ignition/spark (msd or something)
possibly a full ecu, link or wolf but only if its cheap enough (I'm thinking it wont be) and if that install and tune is cheap enough i'd go a stage one cam, can't go nuts when fuel is on the increase..
other trash like an oil cooler and a wire tidy up. (doesnt really matter)
Now what i want is some more ideas that preferably wouldnt require a new ecu, and probably not a piggyback either cause both would end up over the thousand dollar mark with just a purchase and install, not to mention $500 worth of dyno time, and none of this 'shave the head 20 thou' because i dont want to crack it.

instead of raising comp from head if going rebuild get higher comp pistons while you are there, can't think of much else you would need. it should run nicely, but no idea on piston size if you are boring out to 2.8

it blows a lil smoke so u think it needs a rebuild hahaha
i thought u where selling it :bowrofl: :bowrofl:
Yeah i was but its worth more to me than to sell it, blowing smoke because the valve guides or rings are gone. rebuild = horses

if its just blowing out smoke on start up thats just your stem valve seals and u dont need to rebuild the motor for that

You dont even need to pull the head off for that :)
could be the rings too though, and i need my timing chain done which is pulling the bastard out also..
how about you mr omgimsuchagreatmachanic come and see which it is so i dont have to pay for someone to do one when the problem is the other.

My mate has a Sigma with an Astron bored out to 3.0....

It wont be. Look on the Fast Fours forums, i have seen a lot of ECU's for reasonable money lately, also try Nissan Silvia forums, i saw a Microtech MT-8 (I think) for under $1000 not long back.
As far as doing mods that dont require a new ECU, shaving the head is about your best bet, next to a cam. You cant do much with the fuel side, as the ECU wont like it...You could put a bigger T/B on...
if your getting your timing chain done, get a performance oil pump, i hear they are good.
3L.. damn.. i wonder if the walls between the pots are paper thin though.. as per ECU, if i do go something engine management-wise i think i might just go piggyback because thats all i need, hopefully it'd save me a few bucks and still give good gains because i dont need all the tune-ability because i dont have forced induction and all the adjustable goodies that can come with that, all i'd really want is something like an apexi SAFC or something because theres nothing much else i'd want to be playing with, timing i guess though.. would an AFC deal with a cam too or is that stepping into piggyback/full ems? i was thinking a bigger throttlebody also, and an ignition system, give some fatter sparks..

Yeah 3L, i called him today, he reckons they strengthened it with something
As for piggyback ECU goes, it will be able to accomodate for any modifications you make, but it will need to be wired into the original loom, not fun.
It'll have to be bored and stroked for that size. There is not enough metal to go larger than 2.88 litres.

How does he stop the piston wear?

how does he stop piston knock more like it. lol
*knock knock*
i wanna do the cam thing though because i want it to rev freely but i dont want to spend 2k purely on ecu install and tune

how much is all this costing? how much would a 4g63t cost? Both exxy i know, but i mean, either process is not going to be cheap.... you still got the fast bike?

i smell an owning ryan.... lol
nah sold the bike. the rebuild and stuff i want to do should cost around 3.5K a 4g63t will cost about 6/7K that and consider insurance costs for it and pains that might continue
