View Full Version : idles like a truck
Hey guys,
I have mentioned this before but im still not sure if its right.
My TH seems to idle like a truck, like, it idles smooth. But its quite loud, dont really know how to describe it, kinda clicky and generally just louder than other V6's i have heard. I have heard V6 camrys idle, and you can barely hear them.
So yeah, can some1 just reassure me that this is normal in this type of engine. Its always done it since I purchased it at 75,000klms so yeah, any help would be appreciated.
Cheers,

Hey yeah it can be normal for these engines to idle kinda loud, most likely the injectors making the noise. Though when I bought my car I had rattling pulleys.. mainly these were noisey when idling cold at 1400rpm, but replaced all pulleys fixed it.
I'd run some injector cleaner through it and run some 98 ron fuel perhaps.. might not do much but can't hurt for an idea...

Cheers,
I had a KH which i bought with 120,000km on it and it had a poor idle (to the point where the backrest of the passenger seat would vibrate quiet a bit at the traffic lights if no one was sitting in it. To try and reduce this, I had sparkies replaced with a full bank of platinum and had all injectors cleaned, didn't make a massive difference but improved it slightly. Toyota do have a very quiet and smooth V6 and i would probably say that Mitsu V6s are fairly unrefined (no one is allowed to take offence, i am on my second one) by comparison to other V6s.
I would not worry about this idle, unless its a very clunky sounding idle. Unfortunatley its one of those quirky little 'magnaisms' which we have all come to love (or perhaps more appropriatley, hate). A little thing i used to do to improve it at the lights etc was to slip it into 'neutral' as vibration was worse at lower revs.

Opposite for me. I've only owned two cars, a 1994 Toyota Wide Body Camry... and my current Magna.
The Camry used to idle really badly at the lights, took it to a mechanic a few times, and he said everytime there was nothing wrong, it just had a rough idle. The car only had 110,000k's.
The Magna is loud at the lights, but I think its mostly due to the exhaust...

It seems as though this is a problem Mitsubishi could not get rid of.
Tips;
Clean Throttle Body
Everyone will say Spark plugs & Leads
Clean Injectors
Radiator mounting secure & stable
Fuel Filter

except he said it idles smooth just its noisey, i'd be looking more at what oil youre using in it
maybe change oils get n oil flush. and yeah check the pulleys.
mine idles quiet as and is smooth as aswell and so do most of the others up here
...i just use whatever oil mitsubishi puts in whenever they service the car, figured they should know wot is best for it.
is this idle worse in the 3.5s???
cause i have heard some 3.0L idle a bit noisily, however there seems to be conflicting views...it would appear some do it, some do not???
the idle is smooth, and dosent seem to have the shuddering when stationary in gear, it is just quite tappy/clicky/noisy when it is at idle.
cheers

I like to describe it like the sound of a chaff cutter.....but not quiet an egg beater :bowrofl:
Mine does this aswell and ticking when it's cold.....it's ugly on a 2003 KJ with only 20,000km on the clock. These little problems (which seem common. NOTE: common, not normal) really let these vehicles down and woulb be, seemingly, easily avoided as other car manufactures seem to effortlessly produce V6 motors without these problems.

i think its the oil your talking about....
sounds like a real fast 'click click click click' (diesel cams)
IF SO, then change the oil...

try running a 15w50 pennzoil oil, Most cases mitsubishi recommend castrol magnatec i ran this and the motor was as noisey as. change to pennzoil and now its nice n quiet
try doing an oil flush aswell cleans the crap out of the lifters, which quietens them down
can i show my ignorance by asking what an oil flush is, what does it do?? and how is it done?
i have never heard of anybody doing this before

horses for courses when it comes to toyota vs mitsu and who has a better built engine blah blah blah..
we dont know the history of this particular car, for all we know the tappets could be on their way out, the wrong oil used and has it had its 100,000 service (if applicable)
did you own this car from new?
I purchased this car at 75k klm 12mths ago.
I think it has always made the noise, I was just wondering if any1 else had the same problem.
I never said Toyotas engines were any better than Mitsubishi, i just said they were quieter at idle. The 3.5 engine is fantastic otherwise.

I wouldn't say its mitsu vs toyota, i would probably say it's mitsu vs just about any other manufacturer that produces a modern V6 engine. Mine has just on 20,000kms on it and i consider it to be noisy, particularly at cold startup. And I assure you it's not the oil etc. I have tried several weights of Penrite oils already in it's short life.

My 3.5l has done just over 120000kms since i rebuilt it in 2001 and its been revved hard from day one and my engine is quiet at start up when cold and when its warm.
I only use synthetic oil (Shell helix ultra 5w-40) at every oil change. Ya only need a tiny amount of gum or sludge to block the tiny hole in the lifter and they'll tick like mad.
My boss has a 2.4L triton thats only done 16000kms and that ticks when cold, he asked what oil they put in it at its service and was told castrol GTX......

using penrite is youre first mistake try pennzoil its much better in these engines
