Well guys and gals, seems I have moved in here now as well as the first gen area....Just put a deposit on a 3rd gen TH 1999 Altera Magna Wagon. Preety happy with it, its black and has already got the tinted windows and chrome that I wanted for looks. Its Auto and only has bout 130000 odd kms on it. All luxuries except power windows :( Next thing once we get it next week is to get it lowered and get a set of chrome wheels on it....
Does anyone here know if you can fit 18" rims on them?? We're not so sure about the clearance at the back arches....
Pics will be up in the post your ride thread as soon as I pick her up!
Regards,
Anna

Nice buy, you'll have to post some pics.
Heres some pics of 1 of my mates TJ wagon lowered (he should of gone super lows) with 18's, should give you some idea of clearance available.

congratulations on your purchase.
However, if it doesn't have power windows, are you sure its an Altera??? All Altera's have power windows (Pretty much the top of the line)

Well it can't be a TH Advance because we have power windows.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but the Altera badge was only on the TE/TF models. On TH models the only Altera is Altera LS, which is the top of the line model, definately has power windows.
Maybe this car is actually a TF Altera??

The only car that had a lot of features BUT did not have power windows in the 98/99 lineup was the TF Wagon Advance. The 99 Altera and 98 Altera both had power windows standard, So i presume the car you have bought must be a 1998 TF Wagon Advance because they come with dual airbags, ABS, cruise control BUT don't have power windows standard. So I am assuming it must have been this, and possibly the previous owner got confused and said it was an altera instead of an advance when you bought it.

It doesn't matter what it is really. I would remove the badging anyways. hehhehehe. Its a TH, that's all that matters. :D
Yeah, you will have no problems with 18" wheels. But i wouldn't go bigger than 18"x8". Anything wider, then it may stick out, unless you get less of an offset. I dunno...

hey welcome the the land of 3rd gens!
You should be able to fit anything up to 20's on your car without scrubbing, as long as you dont go crazy low so a nice set of 18's will fit the car perfectly. All the best with the new toy

I am buying it from a panel beater who buys them from auction, fixes them up and sells them. This one had a side scrape down the drivers door and is good as new now. As for the price, $10,990 including all onroad costs. The LMCT paperwork says its a 1999 TH Magna, and the guy said he has been getting parts in shepp at mitsubishi who told him it was an altera..It also has altera badges on it.. I must admit that when I noticed that it only had the one airbag and no power windows and I did some reading I had a small doubt but I dont know Mitsubishis that well and took his word for it. Thanks for the comments guys, time for some more investigating...
Cheers
Anna
EDIT: If it helps with my case, the car has a 3.5litre V6 in it and the really nice interior in it.
EDIT2: Thanks to the FAQ site on third gen menu I may have solved this problem using the VIN of my car and their guide about what it all means....will keep u posted... Is it possible to buy the badges "altera" and just stick them on a car??

Indeed. If I really wanted to I can buy VR-X badging tommorow and stick them on. Of course imho thats a lame thing to do unless you've pretty much converted it into a VR-X.
I'm pretty curious now on what model you've got.
If it definitely has a 3.5L engine then it has to be at least a TH Magna. But by that era, the only models without power windows were the Executive's. It's a possibility that you have a Executive with the optional drivers airbag. Otherwise it may have been some Limited Edition run that isn't specified in Redbook.
The only genuine way is to work it out from the VIN number now I guess.

Well I decided to withdraw from the sale..... only because of the way the sales guy treated my fiance... refered to him as a "wanker who put a deposit on the magna" (excuse the language) when he rang to say that its not what hes saying it is and denied that the boss was there then mysteriously the boss came to the phone.... plus the fact that a few locals have said be careful of this guys repair work and that it would bite me in the butt in a few years......also he wouldnt budge in his price and after looking on line have found newer cars for around the same price (just high kms on them!) we get the deposit back today, and im going to look at a 2000 TH Advance and a 2001 TJ solara advance both wagons in melbourne/geelong this weekend, any luck ill come home with a car....we have learned alot through this experience about magnas and the different features/options in each car and hopefully wont go thru this again!!
Thanks guys for all your help and patience!

hey Anna,
If you're after a car around the 10K mark I highly suggest looking at the auctions. A year ago I saw TJs with 40Ks going for around 12-14K. All very tidy. I'm sure you could find something nice for your money.

I'm glad you pulled out on the sale Anna! I knew there was something fishy up with that... What a loser, he gets a TH exec and trys to rebadge it as an altera..... That's soo wrong! Anyway, $11,000 for a TH exec with 130,000kms is wayy to much. You can get TJ's with 40,000kms on them for $12,000 so I would look around for a TJ advance probably and pay a little bit more.
