In Simple Terms

CamShaft is a long metal piece with lobes that opens and closes the intake and exhaust valves...

Trust me if you had a broken camshaft or cam belt you would of known by now  i heard an engine trying to start with a camshaft that was snapped in half once and it didnt sound to healthy , but yeah your engine wont start if either are broken.

Thank of the camshaft as the brain of the engine which does all the timing events for the intake of air into the cylinders and the output of exhaust. the red thing in your photo is the cambelt cover under which is a belt that connects to your crankshaft and water pump and to 2 cam gear's which are connected to the ends of your camshafts.
