Hi all,
Just wondering if there is any way to replace the battery in a TF remote or do I need to purchase a whole new remote?
Many thanks in advance.

The remote controls apparently have a non replaceable battery.
That said, I'm planning on opening up my dead remote and i'll advise if it can be put together again.

Yeah its a stupid idea.. ya cant open them. I've had to replace mine twice in 3 years, its about $60 or so from mitsu.

Can you use the remote from another car (magna)? I read in the manual that you can program it or something...would you be able to keep your original remote and program another one as well (on different frequencies I would assume)

The remotes (the ones with green/red/grey button) are NOT SEALED.
Stick a coin (or two fingernails) in the edges, and they pop apart.
Go down to woolies or coles or DSE and get a Panasonic CR2032 3 volt lithium camera battery for about $5. Remove your old battery and refit the new one within 30 seconds of each other and you don't have to reprogram your remote.
Simple. Mitsubishi don't like you doing this because you don't buy their remotes, so they say in their manual that you cannot replace the battery.

What about the older (3 grey button?) ones, Heath?

I was told last night that you can open them but be careful not to break the wires.
I was told just to get a flathead screwdriver and jimmy the top of it seeing that the wires are near the bottom. But then again I was also told that they need to be re-programed.
At the moment my two remotes will open the car fine it is trying to lock it that can be the effort. I am guessing that this would be a battery problem and not the lock button. Sometimes it locks fine other times I have to walk right next to the car and press it 5 - 6 times before it locks

But then again I was also told that they need to be re-programed.
The remotes should be hardcoded, shouldn't need programming after battery change?
Car can be DIY reprogrammed to accept any & new remotes (how to do - its in the manual).
But your repowered ones should be broadcasting the same code as before too
so the car should still recognise them.

Magnette - Sorry, I don't know...
It would be probably worth a try, you have to buy a new one if you cannot anyway.

Don't know anyone who's still got an older 3rd gen anymore who might have a donor patient.
Someone did once say the PCBs are potted or the cases welded shut.
Dearer too... those 3-greys are $90+ vs $60 for the red/green/grey.
Just curious more than anything.

Paceway Mitsubishi in Osbourne park just quoted me $71 for a new remote, programmed to the car. Mine's busted, try to fix it myself and now it's completely fructis.

Just jimmied mine open, hard day at work as you can tell
Theres nothing of them
The battery is the same that is in the remotes for the Eclipes in the Ralliarts. Not sure what you call them. Oversize hearing aid battery.
The one that is in mine is a Panasonic CR 2032 3Volt
Just took the battery out and put it back inCar still opens and shuts
God I hate car dealers and service men. They will do anything to get a buck outta ya

Programming instructions:
Easy as. Key in ignition, turn from accessories to ON and back quickly a few times until your turning indicators flash then press any key on the remote. This technique works on any grey 3 button remote whether programmed before or not.
I've tried everything to open my grey 3 button remote and asked a few places but they all said no. If the green/red button ones open then yay, Mitsu is saving some people wasteful money.

ok then, sounds like
-3xgrey cannot be opened (welded shut)
-green/red/grey can be opened
yay!

CR 2032 is a very common cell, can even buy them in some supermarkets and KMart for $3.
Used in everything from HP 12c calculator to Apple Newton MessagePad 100. :P
And quite a few of those LED keyring lights.

Jeez you guys... you made me so curious about the whole shebang,
I went and opened up my red/green/grey remotes on Friday.
Had spare 2032s lying about, so I changed one of them.
The boards also looked a bit dirty, so I sprayed some contact cleaner onto them.
And of course the NEXT person to use it was the Wife, on a rush to go out.
Would the blipper work??! ... oc course NOT!! hehehe
(the buttons were still a bit 'wet' from the spraying, since fixed itself)

Don't go around bending those plastic tabs.
Look at it closely... the battery holder is designed to be springloaded
on the edge and the spring pushes the cell against the plastic claws.
Just push the cell away from the claws... and it'll just pop out. :D
Discovered this little remote is designed & made by BOSCH.
Very impressed - Excellent engineering, fantastic design!
The red/green/grey rubber buttons are molded as 1pc.
This same rubber molding also acts as a gasket between the 2 case halves.
This thing is pretty much splashproof!

I opened up my TE remote like months ago, it too has the CR 2032 battery, but its a one button model and the case is welded shut, I did get it open though the case is now shot, so will be replacing battery and building new case, probably out of wood.

If you had cut it open neatly with a razor saw or a Dremel disc,
could you have glued the case back together ok?
eww, i really hate these remotes. I have a 3 grey button one, and the plastic ring which goes into your keyring has snapped off, so its impossible to carry it around on my keyring.
Also...the buttons are all broken and peeled off so i can see the little green buttons inside now.
I hate these things. Anybody got some cool DIY repair ideaS?

Yes, I dont see why not, just be careful not to cut the pcb inside.
