The cloth under the bonnet, is there any advantage to having it there, or removing it?

The movement of air through your engine takes away a lot more heat than conduction through the bonnet will.

Agreed. Interesting, I noticed on my TJ, that the cold air intake for the airfilter etc actually protudes past the weather strip along the front underneath side of the bonnet. Allowing cold air into the intake. A lot o peoples on these forums reckon the Magna doesn't allow enough cold air in via this method? Is that true?

by the way,.. EA to EB Falcons were notorious for generating so much under bonnet heat, with a crowded engine bay, that they 'cooked' batteries v quick. Within 5,000 k's or something. so maybe reducing underbonnet heat is a good thing, generally.

but the 'mattress' should stay. :)
