just get some nice splits and 6x9's atm thats if you have a good head unit because $1000 will not get you too much in my eyes lol i spent $1000 just on my sub and mono amp and normal amp to run my speakers but i dont like stuff at the lower end of the scale. but your choice.
go speak to the guys at jb hifi they alway have some good prices on stuff.

If ur after quality, invest all ur money in some decent front splits. Esp if you plan on upgrading to an amp/sub later on. You could easily go a 4 channel amp to power the sub and fronts.
Your ears are up the front, if you have a sub you wont need to worry about using the 6x9's for bass.

if you want a decent system without paying over $1k i have one word! EBAY!!!! only buy brand new stuff tho, most new gear on ebay is way below rrp! but always check postage cost too! i got a new pair of soundstream splits for $175 all up rrp $350! top line decks going for under half price!

Hey dude - good luck building your system, with a little planning it can give u pleasure for years to come!
A $1K BUDGET these days can go quite far... you;ll get sick of comparing everything.
Are you looking at adding more to the system later? If so forget 6*9s coz if you get a sub you'll ditch them and it'll be money wasted.
If a quality (balanced) and natural sound is what you want id put your 6*9 budget into an amp to drive some front splits and maybe a sub
If you can build a box yourself consider the following as a guideline...
CD Deck: $250
Fronts: $250
12" Sub $200
4 Ch Amp $300
For a budget system the jaycar amps rock! Heaps of power for Dynamic Range to the fronts and ample to drive a single 12" nice tight and loud! there 4*130wrms is only $300
Theres quite a few options ones you get over $200 for splits but stay away from pioneer, sony etc! I believe with a lil shopping around you could be looking at some nyyyyce focals, JL have a 6" pair of splits which will slot straight into 3rd gen magna door pods with no mods - you can pick them up for around $300 but theres heaps of other options..have a good listen and see what u like!
Subs at $200 - theres plenty! Again listen to plenty of different ones and see what sounds best to you...if a quality sound is what your after a 12" in a well designed sealed enclosure (built by you) will go deeper, sound waaay tighter and more forceful than any 6*9s you look at and just put a big smile on your face in general. However if your after LOUD as, BOOMY bass (and listen mostly to hip hop, jungle, dub reggae etc..) you mite be happier with a 12" in a ported box (not my style but they have plenty of fans).
GOOD LUCK and Happy Listening!!!

i agree 1k is enough to make a good budget system. What about 2nd hand products from paper or web sites you can get good deals there. Yeah 6*9s if you are getting a sub or 2 is a waste AlexG break down of your budget looks good too me

Thanks for all the tips guys...
iam an ebay user and ill probably get stuff off there but i do have a few concerns about 2nd hand equipment as someone mentioned.. i fear that the speakers have been thrashed and on their last legs, hence why i want to buy new stuff. but we'll see :)
anyone got any more opinions?

Find a friend who works at your local car audio joint and get cost price, that's your best bet.

The headunit retails for $1000, i picked it up for $525
The 6x9's are something to see me through until i can afford a decent sub and amp package.
unfortunetly i have a bass addiction..and i prefer only to use quality parts...so 1 boss amp and a sanyo sub wont cut it.
picking up my 2001 TJ magna 2morro :)

You said you like Quality Gear.. Then why the heck did you get Kenwood 6x9's ??
Kenwood are crap....I rate all their gear worse then Sony...
Nice choice of Deck...
Look at Getting some Alpine Type S or Pioneer splits for fronts these will get you the quality you are after without going too over board..
Crank the Kenwoods Daily wait till they get sun damaged and Blow then replace them with a suitable Brand like Clarion, Pioneer or JBL..

I'm becoming more and more impressed by the design (in terms of looks) of the JVC Headunits, that's a fantastic looking headunit. Not only that but JVC are great products in terms of build quality, so you've got a great deal there mate. Follow it up with a nice pair of splits, some 6" in the rear, and a good subwoofer, all powered by Audison amplifiers ;-)

calm down. I have had kenwood 6x9s in my car for 3 years now and they havent blown up yet? 50w RMS running through them too, but no explosions! When i was without a sub for a while and took them off the HPF settings, they cranked surprisingly hard.
sir boost, are you still getting those Alpine goods from your mate? cos thats a ridiculously low price for all of it!!

my dad has had this kenwood amp for 12 years now, its powering two PIONEER 6*9's, and i tell you this amp has been put through its paces and has not missed a beat once.
everyone has there own brands they like and dislike, and i know your story magnat, how you beat the kenwood rep (was it rep?) in a sound off, and shortly later some of his equipment blew up.
fair enough
but some stuff they make is ok, this is proof

I agree, out of all the brands Kenwood, whilst not being the best, definetly isnt the worst.
We have heaps of Kenwood audio gear in the house. Alongside Sony. And also use kenwood speakers in our 250 SE (although not installed or recommended by myself) They don't go too bad at all for the price
